What are your thoughts on depression?

Is it an actual issue, or is it people needing to stop crying over nothing?

I'm interested in what you people have to say about this topic.

Why do I feel like I'm going to regret making this thread?

Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that can affect a person's thoughts, behavior, feelings and sense of well-being.

It's an actual issue that you don't understand it until you are affected by it.

Can't really think of a fake situation to come up with, so lets just say that there isn't one specific reason, there's just a bunch of small reasons that are all piling on top of one another which is ultimately causing this person to become depressed.

Most people are depressed these days because we are so far from a normal human life it is only natural to feel such an emotion of doubt or sadness

Oh hey, you actually know what you're talking about. Wasn't expecting that.

That's an interesting take on it actually. Never really thought of it like that.

The same feelings of depression have always plagued humans, a well as animals.

Loss of Property, loss of companionship and lack of companionship are three of the most basic causes.

Other causes such as loss of emotional connection, lack of emotional connection and lack/loss of self esteem also date long before modern causes.

It can be caused by anything, a great amount of small problems, a small amount of large problems, I just believe some people have better reasons to fall into depression than others. But it also depends on the subject.

Many people take the term "Depression" in to context that don't fit the word itself. Often mixing depression with boredom. Depression is a serious issue that needs to be addressed before it can snowball in to something even more severe, like suicide. When you're depressed it normally feels like there's a Dementor (From Harry Potter) floating and hugging you and doing its sucking thing...eating your happiness.

Now before I end up writing a wallie...I'll just say = YES. It is an actual issue.

And yes. I study psychology.

What are signs and symptoms of depression?

▹Do you have trouble concentrating or remembering things?
▹Do you have angry outbursts frequently?
▹Do you find yourself losing interest in daily activities?
▹Have you experienced a reduced *** drive recently?
▹Do you feel as if your thinking has slowed?
▹Do you wrestle with feelings of sadness and discontent?
▹Do you find that even small tasks require a lot of energy?
▹Are you plagued by regret, getting hung up on past failures?
▹Do you struggle with suicidal thoughts?
▹Do you have trouble sleeping?
▹Are you irritable often?
▹Have you noticed a change in your appetite recently?
▹Are you agitated or anxious often?
▹Do you break into crying spells for no apparent reason?

You said companionship twice, but just for arguments sake. Wouldn't that depression be short or temporary? Say a family member dies (loss of companionship), sure, you're sad. But not really for too long, a couple months maybe if they were close to you. Although if you look at a lot of the depression cases in todays society, they usually last multiple years.

Those are some spot on questions to ask, although the one I bolded I'm not too sure about. Before I jump to a conclusion, what exactly do you mean by "wrestle"?

Yes you're correct. When you lose a family member or someone, you go through the 5 (or 6 forgot) stages of grief. You do feel slight depression, but that's basically grief.

That sounds more like depression

Loss of compainionship and lack of companionship are completely different phenomenon.

Loss is the initial losing of a companion in any capacity, lack is the absence of said companion or the absence of companions in general.

Both loss and lack can cause depression.

I personally don't believe that, I'm just saying that to get people interested in the conversation to say their POV :3. It obviously worked with you.

Fair enough, I could respect that.

Oh gees, I thought you just said loss of companionship twice, I sort of just skipped over the word lack >.> my fault.

Actually your brain just assumed and filled in the word as "loss" since you saw the word companionship before you saw the word "lack" so your brain jumped the gun and thought it was "loss" again.

That, and also because there was a pattern in the way he said it o.x
Loss of Property, loss of companionship and lack of companionship
I saw the first two as loss, so I assumed it was following a pattern of "loss" as I carried over to the first one, my eyes saw the first letter "l" and jumped to the conclusion that it's the word "loss" and continued to the next word.
