[Discussion] why are people afraid of the dark?

THIS, O...O the aliens.. man! the aliens!! also in the dark thief and bandits breaks into houses like crazy there is no light to show who is who.. also rapist.etc loves when its Darkt so they can do stuff they normally don't do in day Lol like some predator shit

Well but I seriously don't know why people associate darkness with things like Aliens, ghosts etc, I mean common, ghost can attack you in daytime also..

I sleep in the light because its just better.
I don't have to get up and turn off the lights after I finish reading a book.I don't have to stumble towards the light switch before i go to the toilet.I can see if anything is coming at me and the bulb also warms my room.Nothing to do with mentally weak.I have been able to sleep in the dark since the age of 1, i stopped sleeping in the dark at age 9 just because it is better to sleep with light.

Also the dark can be scary since shit can happen when you are alone in the dark.Don't tell me you would be able to spend a day in the forest or a grave yaard when its pitch black alone.

You will stop soon when you get your own place, light = electricity bill.

I used to have to walk home through a grave yard in my last house. I don't believe in ghost but I've always been scared of psychos in case they like to hang out in grave yards. I always ran top speed through it after club nights.

people fear what they doesn't know . it isn't a problem that girls are afraid of dark that's why we exist save them from that darkness =D

fear is something humans feel no matter how strong you may think you are mentally.....it comes once in a while and poof it goes.there is a saying that darkness covers beautiful things and we humans are used to light and beautiful environ' this you will see for yourself when the light in your house suddenly goes out, everywhere becomes ugly and then the fear of the unknown world creeps in.and I think suddenness also play a role.if you knew that very soon I will be eveloped in darkness you wont feel fear that much but when it happens suddenly as humans we become susceptible to one of our human nature(fear).

It's mainly fear of the unknown, not the darkness itself.
The mind tends to make us think there might be something waiting to jump out of us so that we feel more inclined to find somewhere lighter, hence allowing us to see the area much more clearly and prepare for any threats.

I guess it comes down to natural instinct. Without our vision, we wouldn't be able to see an oncoming predator in the wild, for example. Course, we don't have to worry about sabre-tooth cats anymore, but the instinct remains.

As a kid I used to not be scared of the dark, but what I thought lurked there. Now I just remind myself all those movies are fake as shit.
