I always figured he put his body in there after Ishida's fight hence his body being back and Mayuri having all kinds of weird machines and tech. and his skin just hadn't returned to it's normal white color.

Even young Mayuri was white skinned

And if it is face paint then he puts it on more than his face as his arms are white also. The manga wasn't colored so I always just assumed he was bleach white colored and the black was something that came as time progressed. The official consensus seems to be it's like war paint though and I'm not Kubo, so if Kubo says he's skin color then so be it. Side note does Kubo work with the anime 'cus I know Kishi doesn't but I've heard Oda does, just wondering who makes the color choices if the manga hasn't had a color page for it yet, like Gin's eyes. Did Kubo make Gin's eye color or did the anime team make Gin's eye color?
