This is merely a peice of a larger theory I am putting together, I am posting this for self reference purposes and to share my thoughts and get feedback. If you are truly interested in understanding the larger picture of this theory I recommend reading all the parts as they are all quite short.
In this, one of the final threads in this series or pre-theory threads, I will be discussing the possibility of Madara testing out the Infinite Tsukuyomi IN BATTLE against Hahsirama.
BTW Technically this thread is Part 5, but I put Part 4 so that the thead names go in order, its weird...
Madara's last words have been something people havent been able to truly understand for a while now. But consider this:
What really happened:
Hashirama believed that he needed to endure and do something that he was against in order to protect the best interest of the village. He could not forgive Madara's betrayal and resolved to kill him, [
But Madara was still alive and this was merely a genjutsu, and infact it was Madara who could not forgive Hashirama for standing idly while his clan headed towards destruction or forgive the village that would destroy his clan. And thus it is this hatred that would cause Madara to seek revenge.
And thus Hashirama had mistook the cause of their fighting, for what brought about the end of their fighting. "He mistook the cause for the end."
The darkness enveloping the village could be a foreshadowing to the EoTM Plan casting its Gaze over the village. Could build on this more but im tired x__x
Enjoy the read, its a bit half baked in some areas and if you have questions leave a comment, but keep in mind that the main theory I will be publishing soon will be alot more refined and concise.

Introduction
First off, it is my theory that the Moon is actually merely the first phase in a 2 phase technique known as the 3rd eye technique of sungakure, albeit a variation of that technique. Upon using the EoTM Plan Madara will use the Moon to cast his Gaze accross the world trapping everyone within an infinite genjutsu. It is also my understanding that this plan was more than likely passed on to Madara through the Uchiha Tablet from the Sage himself.
Upon reading the tablet Madara understood that it was his responsibility to force the world into peace since the younger brothers descendant could not get it done there way. And to do so he would use the plan that the Sage passed down to him, the EoTM Plan. [
But before he set out on this journey he needed to be sure that it would be possible, and thus... Madara set off to do battle with the one person that has shown to be "Immune" to his Sharingan, the leader to the clan who had been fighting against the Uchiha for as long as it was create, the clan that would know the best ways to counter the Sharingan. If it would work against him, then it would work against anyone.

] (Madara says he has found another way in reference to the tablet, but only someone with the Rinnegan could summon or use the Gedo, So then what way was he talking about? And What urged him to take some of Hashirama's DNA in the first place?) On top of that [

] Madara says in order to explain the EoTM Plan he would start with explaining the Sage, but why not start with the Juubi? Perhaps he wanted to give credit to the author? But before he set out on this journey he needed to be sure that it would be possible, and thus... Chapter 1: Genjutsu
Now based on the 2 scans below everyone thinks Madara used either Izangi or a Genjutsu on Hashirama which allowed him to escape.
The same symbol appears both when they start there attack and when it is finished, and also there is a star shaped symbol near Hashiramas face at the end of the genjutsu which throughout the show has been shown to symbol the end of genjutsu's. (Discovered by Derp Obito). On top of that there has always been a question on Madara's supposed defeat.
In the above after there last charge we see Hashirama tricking Madara with a Wood Clone.. But...
Madara clearly states that he could see through this technique, and yet we find that it is the very same technique that defeats him? No, He because he wasnt really defeated, it was all a genjutsu.

Chapter 2: Misunderstanding
Yes it was infact a genjutsu, but the question is How? Hashirama has fought against Madara for most of his life and had been trained to fight against the Uchiha by a Clan who has been battling them for ages, his father was the leader of that clan, as he is now. How could he fall for a mere Genjutsu? Perhaps it was no mere genjutsu.
In that scan we see Hashirama moving quickly towards his right, and while doing so we see Madara looking at him and activating his MS. But... what if Madara wasnt looking at Hashirama? In the very next scan look at where they are standing.
Madara on the left and Hashirama on the RIGHT, the same direction he was moving to, which would mean that at the time Madara cast his genjutsu, Hashirama wouldnt have been the only thing in his vision, but also... THE MOON!
This would also explain why we see the Genjutsu symbol appearing over the moon in the first place, what if at that point in time, Madara tested out the Infinite Tsukuyomi, and used the Moon to place Hashirama under a Genjutsu? This would also explain why Hashirama didnt notice that he was under a genjutsu.

Madara's last words have been something people havent been able to truly understand for a while now. But consider this:
- Hashirama thought that he had "Ended" the fighting between him and Madara by kiling him.
- Hashirama was actually under a Genjutsu.
- Madara was already worried about the antimocity between the Uchiha and the Senju while hashirama did nothing but dismiss the notion. [

Conclusion
Not much to conclude, I believe Madara used the fighting between him and Hashirama to test out the Infinite Tsukuyomi on him in order to test its ability and see if hashirama could see through the technique. This itself is also a sort of foreshadowing:
Within the Genjutsu, Madara lost because he could not see through Hashirama's Wooden Clone jutsu although he was expected to.
Within Reality, Hashirama lost because he could not see through Madara's Genjutsu although he was expected to.
