Losing to Gai was worth it to see Gai's respect for him in the end.

Kidding? He had one of the most honorable and well written deaths in the entire series. He committed suicide by his own will like a true shinobi; and being beaten by Gai is No shame; he is a boss and the part he said he will remember Kisame until the day he dies (after all those forgetful moments) was a great part; honestly his death was a great showcase of concept of "shinobi", it was brilliant.
