I have a quick question regarding the Gomu Gomu no Mi. I have seen many people criticized recently for referring to the Gomu Gomu no Mi as a Logia type instead of a Paramecia type. I wanted to see how the base felt about this topic.

To me, a Logia type is determined by one defining quality; the user's body composition is completely changed to the element of the Devil Fruit (Smoker's Smoke, Ace's Fire, Enel's Lightning, etc.). Now it has been shown from the moment that Luffy consumed the Gomu Gomu no Mi that his body is always rubber unless being effected by the sea. Thus, indicating that Luffy's composition has been completely changed.

The main argument I've seen against Luffy being a Logia type is that he can be physically hit without someone applying Haki; however, this is a simple misconception. A Logia type doesn't necessarily make you immune to physical attacks, it's just that the majority of the Logia's we've seen this far have been elements such as fire, electricity, light, and smoke. you simply can't punch those effectively. Though if we delve a little deeper we see examples that are more similar to Luffy. These examples are Crocodile, Akoiji, and even Akainu. Their elements being sand, ice, and magma. We've seen Luffy have extensive fights (for the sake of argument) against Crocodile and Akoiji. The issue wasn't that Luffy was unable to hit either opponent, but instead was that Crocodile's sand would absorb the blow and disperse or Akoiji's ice would freeze Luffy upon contact. These elements can be physically touched, but it's simply inneffective.

In conclusion, though Luffy is able to physically attacked the Gomu Gomu no Mi he consumed was still a Logia type Devil Fruit. This is due to his entire bodily composition being changed to rubber by default. This can be supported by looking at like element's of Logia Fruits such as Akainu's, Akoiji's, and Crocodile's.

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

He's a Paramecia. Paramecia either turns you into something or let's you create something. Logia does both. The Gomu Gomu no Mi made Luffy rubber, but he can't create rubber, thus, he is a Paramecia and not a Logia.
That's a valid point, fair enough. + rep

Luffy is a paramecia deal with it.
Okay man, just trying to discuss the different possibilities, no need to get short tempered. I'm honestly not trying to necessarily push for one way or the other, I stated what I had observed and wanted to hear how other's had interpreted it. Rickerslade, however, has clarified my misconception. I believe that his clarification is correct in classifying Luffy as a Paramecia.

I Agree with some of the comments above,
and Rayleigh said to luffy while teaching about haki that "Even the freely flowing bodies of logia types can be hit by haki" this proves that a logia DF users body can flow freely(as we've seen some of logia types) ,and since luffy's body cant he's paramecia type.

Pretty sure it said it was a Paramecia type in the manga. The main difference I see is Logia are able to manipulate their body into their element while as you said Luffy is stuck as a rubber man all the time. Aokiji wasn't walking around looking like Iceman, Ace isn't looking like the Human Torch, Logia users can break apart their bodies something Luffy can't do.

The fact that Shanks knew what fruit he found means he read it up in one of those DF encyclopedia's. Meaning it is a 100% Paramecia. And even if it is a Logia, it'd make no difference since the NW revolves around Haki and a Logia with Haki fighting anyone else with Haki is the same as a human fighting except with abilities. So if Oda were to have intended it to be a Logia, it would've made sense to do so is Paradise, but now it simply makes no difference. Hence it's a Paramecia.

What makes a Logia a Logia is of course its elemental powers, but it's the fact that they are intangible. Something Luffy can't do. But a big difference between Luffy's DF and a Logia is that, like you said, Luffy is always rubber. A Logia user isn't always on fire, always sand or whatever the case may be. They activate their Logia powers.

And of course what other people have brought up: Luffy can't create rubber.
