He wants to be the one to kill Naruto. He doesn't want anybody else to do it. So until then, he's protecting Naruto from dying.
Judging by Sasuke being an emotionally unstable Uchiha with motives that only pertain to protecting Konoha itself but not specific people in it, I'd say Sasuke wants to kill Naruto

Hm, I think it means he will be the one to eliminate Naruto, kinda like how Vegeta saved Goku so he would be the one to finish him. But I'm hoping its option 2, maybe we need another chapter first

Exactly! Sasuke tries to kill Naruto but is defeated and gets tnjed. Then he returns to the village. Happily ever after.
