Hashirama died some time after the founding of Konoha in one of the many wars that were raging during this revolutionary era, but not before passing on the title of Hokage to Tobirama. that's all.... so probably many people or died from exhausting just like 3rd raikage...

i think it was not necessary for him since he was the strongest after Hashi and Madara. he would have collected it for edo tensei. ie he would easily summon hashi when he gets threatened(during world war) and then hashi solos!(its just for fun though)
