also rinnegan is the highest evolution of dojutsu, so who knows what its true potential is. The sharingan descended from the rinnegan, so it would only be natural for the rinnegan to also have the power of the sharingan or similar ones.

We saw Madara utilizing his rinnegan along with the sharingan powers instead of the rinnegan juts wiping out his previous dojutsu abilities. Perhaps that's how the true rinnegan is?

Not to mention the fact that Rikudou has both Uchiha and Senju blood in him
