I think it has more to do with the relationship fire and shadow have.

A bright fire can eradicate shadow, or make it stronger if there is something in it's way.

I think Zeref believes that Natsu's flame is strong enough to destroy his shadow.

natsu already has an edolas form, he was a complete ***** if he wasn't drving

I just started watching but from what I observed; he knows that no one currently CAN beat him, but he believes Natsu has the potential to grow as powerful as him and surpass him.

Seriously you guys I just read this thread I aint gettin any new information.... well okay fine how about IU add some to you.. Natsu has latent ability which is to awaken dragon force but it was sealed within him because it was too powerful for him to control it which is why the dragons left 14 years ago leaving the dragon slayers alone and back to humans.. this is because their mission to find a dragon slayer that can kill real dragons or more specifically Acnologia has to be a dragon mage... I wonder what would happen if this new dragon force of Natsu makes him to transform into a dragon
