Letting the main character meet his hero is something Naruto would do like how he got to meet both his 15 year dead parents. Shanks dying before Luffy reaches him would be a more realistic story device which Oda seems to implement.

But if you're dead set on the idea they'll meet again it'll probably happen the same way it did with Ace. Luffy watches him die, spurring on his next big advance.

No they Haven't met since East Blue, but they probably will in the future.

Shanks and Luffy will meet probably on Luffy's 3rd Yonko fight coz BB is the last Yonko any supanova would go after and Shanks right before BB. Luffy and Law's alliance is to takedown all Yonko so they will difnetly meet for that encounter and remember Luffy did promise Shanks that he(Luffy) would have a crew that won't lose to Shanks' crew, so the only way to know for sure if SH-crew is then stronger they will have to fight .

Shanks came to Marineford but Luffy was KOed and Shanks was going to give the hat back but said that Luffy hasn't become the legendary pirate he wanted to be yet.

I think Shanks will meet Luffy after Zoro beats Mihawk. And then Mihawk will join Shanks and fight the BB pirates and all die.

Bear in mind this is in another 5/6 years in RL-time.
