Kishimoto gave Hiruzen one battle way back in 2002; a battle in which Orochimaru literally had to wait until Hiruzen was at the age where he could barely lift Enma in base staff form just so he could humiliate and execute him. Not to mention the psychological warfare of him having to kill his two teachers and his most beloved student. Even then, he didn't do too horrible, holding his own before finally sacrificing himself for Konoha. Since then he was shown successfully pushing full-powered Kurama out of the village during an ambush attack and has gotten no real panel time during this war. Without even considering it to be a possibility, you refuse to give him the chance to showcase his skill, automatically assume he could never be on the level of Hashirama and then write him off as fodder.
