Why did Obito even attack Konoha 16 years ago?

It's unknown. He probably wanted to attack because of his newfound hatred toward the ninja system, but obviously never intended to lose it. He may have just planned on keeping it somewhere for a few decades.

there is a simple answer to this and that's YONDAIME MINATO
this was the weakest situation where he could have ever found minato at. Minato would have stopped obito if he were to carry out his plans
Minato has marks basically on all the villages and those marks never disappear.
He prepared everything to trapped minato. He intentionally put bombs on his newly born baby to make minato use FTG. He took kushina somewhere that would take minato time to get to. He chose to attack the village with the nine tail demon fox because he knew minato would want to protect the village. He chose the moment where minato had to take care of kushina. If kushina were to be alive, it would have been tough to take the nine tail demon fox.
His main goal was to trap minato and get rid of him. Of course he wanted the nine tail demon fox but he couldn't.

the tailed beasts must be sealed in order of tails. He couldn't seal the 9 tails since he didn't have the 1 tails(or any of the rest for that matter.)
As minato said he couldn't contain it for long either.

Well what was his purpose for even controlling the Kyuubi? Obito had no desire for vengeance or anything :erm:

planting distrust between the uchiha and the village. Remember. After that he went to the uchiha to rekindle flames of war(but got stopped by itachi.)

he was the only one with the special power to stop the nine tail demon fox from destroying the village. the third hokage was only pushing the nine tail demon fox away from the village but the third wouldn't have been able to stop the tail beast bomb.
Minato had to finish the fight obito as quick as possible to take care of the nine tail demon fox. He did but the nine tail demon fox was already extracted out of kushina. Minato had to think quick. minato always wanted to give the nine tail demon fox to naruto. Since killer bee was made the host of the eight tail demon from very young age, the bond between them was stronger. Minato was going to do the same. He was going to give naruto the nine tail demon fox at very young age.
Like I said, the nine tail demon fox was already extracted. He couldn't seal the nine tail demon fox back to kushina again because she was extremely weak. He couldn't have seal the nine tail demon fox to another villager because the nine tail demon fox was too strong for anyone.
The only option was to take half of the nine tail demon fox chakra to him and half to naruto. Naruto was a baby and he wouldn't have been able to handle the full chakra of the nine tail demon fox. But to take half of the nine tail demon fox, he had to use the death reaper.
It was the only option, he had no other choice...

had minato not stopped the nine tail demon fox, there wouldn't have been a village. It would have only been the uchiha... Obito wasn't only destroying the houses or planting fear. He was actually killing the shinobis.
what happened after was just a narutal cause and effect which obito took advantage of. He didn't planned on planting fear then. From every action there is a reaction.

whether or not minato stopped him he couldn't keep, nor could he seal the kyuubi.
He'd still have to let it free and go get garra first.

you said his plan to plant mistrust between konoha and uchiha but there wouldn't have been a konoha to hold mistrust against uchiha if minato didn't stop obito. What happened to the uchiha massacre was just a natural cause it was not planned.
well he could have send the nine tail demon fox to his dimension. Kakashi tried to send the statue to another dimension. Obito could have done the same with nine tail demon fox and summon the nine tail demon fox whenever he wanted

yes to plant mistrust.He attacked when the uchihas were away. Whether or not minato stopped it the uchihas would still be alive(not in village) and obito would be without a kuubi. He can still approach them and ask for help even if the village is gone.
No he could not. He never warped something that big and doesn't have the reserves to warp something that big.

so the uchiha would have had mistrust on the village??
kakashi took the eight tail demon to his(obito's) dimension and brought it back at the front of the ten tail demon eye. obito has hashirama's cell, has uchiha blood and has more chakra than kakashi... and you are saying that that he can't warp the nine tail demon fox to his dimension.?

The uchiha had distrust since tobirama's reign. Even if the village was destroyed the uchihas would still be living regardless of what minato did. He can still approach them just like how he approached the ame orphans.
Kakashi did that with 3 times his normal chakra levels(kurama chakra)
obito at that point it time didn't have enough chakra to do such a feat.
