It is not known what they do, though it's possible they are the origin of the Sharingan & rennigan.

I personally think the son just had rinnegan. The swirly pattern we see is just how someone percieved the rinnegan to appear. We clearly dont actually see the sages sons but images of them that look like drawings. I think either that is the case or its some form we havent seen in between Sharingan and Rinnegan, but I find this less likely.

This. It was more than likely a mutated Rinnegan. It wouldn't be a stretch to say he had Rinnegan abilities.
