Naruto is a great character and the namesake of the series for the reason that he carries the Will of Fire. And as we know, it was the Will of Fire that created Konoah.

That and him being the Child of Prophecy and his connection to the Sage of the Six Paths

never really liked main characters before,naruto is the first one,maybe because he doesn't really have the vibe of redundant main character in shonin mangas who succeed in whatever they do,their arrival means beating up the villains and they seem to always have double personnalities,one goofy in the life and in combat they turn calculating and calm,naruto always seemed true to me never suffered from that switch neither got the power of love/friendship/hate asspulls,his power seemed always logical,well that made him also too much predictible.
well naruto is the most trolled main character in the history of anime,since no matter how strong he gets he can't do a thing(well i guess it's kishimoto's way to keep naruto fans attached to the story until the moment he stops doing that,but honestly i got tired of waiting),but defend himself(the war arc is my proof,BM,super speed,and can't even land a hit on obito,and gets caught by a crippled nagato).this is the main reason naruto has so many haters.

In my opinion Naruto isn't a great character. The series has grown because of the characters around Naruto. Kakashi drew me into the series, Orochimaru's villianous ways kept me interested, Itachi and my wanting to prove he was a good brother also kept me going, Sasuke as a villiawas pretty good until he met Edo Itachi, Nagato and JirayaMs backrounds were cool, Tobi before the Obito reveal and now MadaraMs full power.

These things keepBkept the series interesting but not Naruto himself.
