I know this is old news, but did anyone ever post a solid theory on how Madara survived Hashirama's sword?

I think Derp Obito did. Through genjutsu, I believe.

He miraculously lived by clinging on to his life to kill Hashirama and his dream.

izanagi is the most likely reason for his survival. Hashirama stated that he truly believed that he killed Madara at the valley of the end. This eye technique is one of the only ways Madara could have logically survived.

He already had a hole in his chest and it was pure luck that Hashi just happened to plunge a sword right through it. All he had to do was act like he died.

madara couldn't have used izanagi at that time because in the fight between obito and konan, obito says you need both senju and uchiha DNA to use izanagi. Madara didn't get Senju DNA until Hashirama died. DerpObito porbably has the best theory right.

His theory doesn't explain why Hashi's face is exactly where his stab wound is. It can't be purely coincidence.

Hasirama's face is there probably because thats where he injected the senju DNA at first, Just like how Danzo had Hashirama's face on his shoulder where his senju cells were. But thats just a thought.

What? You are wrong. No theory needed. Hashirama's cells is used to extend the duration of Izanagi. Uchiha's can use the Izanagi without Hashirama's cells.

Also, why are you making his death complicated and over-thinking?

The same way Kakashi will probably survive being impaled by Obito's chakra rod.

Originally it was stated that you need Senju DNA to use Izanagi, but now it seems to be the opposite. Seems to me that Kishi changed it in order to do just that, give Madara a way to survive the fight. But yes, originally it was stated that only a person with both Uchiha and Senju blood could perform it.
