While many think this is a supposedly "EPIC FAIL", I think it's pure genius on the part of Kishi who once again proves his worth...This is why...
This fight is not just a fight for Obito...It is with his former comrade...who defeated him in all aspects, including Rin(who fell for Kakashi)...The overlay of the flashback ninja fight meant for Obito that he HAD become better on his own...He could now beat Kakashi just in a kunai fight itself...And if Rin was present(which she is to him), she would watch Obito defeating Kakashi on his own. Not due to some power he had obtained. Of course there's the moon'eye plan to execute later...But if Obito truly believes that Rin isn't dead, his fight with Kakashi without the Rinnegan is a masterstroke of character-development on Kishimoto's part...
The fact that he lost meant nothing...Simply that Obito is Obito just as Lee is Lee and that he can't use ninjutsu doesn't mean that he is weak or useless...
