While many think this is a supposedly "EPIC FAIL", I think it's pure genius on the part of Kishi who once again proves his worth...This is why...

This fight is not just a fight for Obito...It is with his former comrade...who defeated him in all aspects, including Rin(who fell for Kakashi)...The overlay of the flashback ninja fight meant for Obito that he HAD become better on his own...He could now beat Kakashi just in a kunai fight itself...And if Rin was present(which she is to him), she would watch Obito defeating Kakashi on his own. Not due to some power he had obtained. Of course there's the moon'eye plan to execute later...But if Obito truly believes that Rin isn't dead, his fight with Kakashi without the Rinnegan is a masterstroke of character-development on Kishimoto's part...

The fact that he lost meant nothing...Simply that Obito is Obito just as Lee is Lee and that he can't use ninjutsu doesn't mean that he is weak or useless...

Nice ideas. The only problem is that Obito didn't use the rinnegan for the entire war, not just now. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that he only had one rinnegan. Kakashi had stated that the reason Obito didn't use the six paths of pain through the jinchuuriki was only because it would take a real toll on him. In that ocassion, Obito had stated that kakashi had good eyes but he might simply couldn't. Maybe having only one rinnegan allows you to use only some of the techniques.

He doesn't have large chakra reserves like Edo Madara/Nagato/Hashirama.

I just want to mention that obito had only gotten the rinnegan only days before. to expect him to have any kind of mastery of the techniques it has is far fetched at best. as for not using wood element i would agree that he was not using it by choice, either consciously or subconsciously. this chapter was brilliant in showing the conflict between obito and kakashi.

This right here ladies and gents.

Obito basically was being a badass during the whole war, and kishi seems to just be rushing thigs now.

He did use the Rinnegan. Remember he summoned the Heretical Demon Statue. He shared field of vision with the paths. Remember he said that he CAN use them but he wanted to conserve chakra for other things.

Anyways, I think Obito just accepted Kakashi's sparring/duel challenge and held back. With Rinnegan and Wood Release he could have killed Kakashi from a distance but his code of honor made him accept that final hand to hand challenge.

Yeah, I also thought that. You can even put more explanations as to why he didn't use it like for example being too low on chakra. Until it's proven otherwise by Kishimoto you can explain it with tons of reasons :).

Some people freak out too much about this and start making rage threads that Obito should've won ;).
