Well, we really don't know at what time did he attached himself to the Gedo Mazo. . . Madara lost to Hashirama around fifty years ago before him and Obito met. Tobirama died around thirty years ago before Madara and Obito met.

At the time when Tobirama died, Madara was around thirty years younger that when he met with Obito. . . meaning, he might not have been yet attached to the Gedo Mazo.

Hm, yeah it was always a little suspicious how Tobirama got killes by tweny ninjas, those ninjas may have been powerful but still its Tobirama we're talking about. But there is also a similar case of 3rd Raikage also, even the RS which damages body on cellular level couldn't pierce him, a man who stood toe to toe with the 8 tails got killed by 10000 average ninjas(now that sounds heavy but again how did they managed to kill him?)but they did defeated raikage. I am saying same can be the case of Tobirama that he got killed by a special kinkaku force.
But anyways if this theory comes true then thats just gonna add fuel some more fire between edo madara and edo tobirama which would be interesting to see.

Maybe the 3rd Raikage ran out of chakra and died rather than being killed. As we did not see any external signs of battle damage other than the scar on his chest when he was brought back as an edo. Plus the scar was actually from the fight with the eight tails.

For Tobirama to die from a twenty elite Kumo ninja known as the Kinkaku Force it seems quite ridiculous, furthermore he had Hiruzen (who was strong enough to made hokage) and Danzo (who was a rival of Hiruzen and would have beem extremely strong).

I wouldn't doubt if Madara himself fought Tobirama, just to get even with the latter.

Oh btw, I know this is non-canon, but in the Anime, Hiruzen and Danzo were assaulted by paper bombs. That isn't exactly Madara's forte.
