I think he did it so that Sasuke could develop that friendship bond with someone so he wouldn't be so lonely after his clan was massacred. He pretty much knew Sasuke would hate him and not want to follow the path that Itachi had laid out for him, basically assuming he would do the opposite of whatever Itachi told him. The opposite of killing your bestfriend, is cherishing them I guess. Kinda like reverse psychology.
never thought about it like that nice theory

itachi said he didn't have enough hate to kill him he never said he had the potential to surpass him

1. he could of killed him but didn't 2. He was ordered to if he didn't it would be treason and he would be discovered 3. i agree

what
yes he told sasuke he had the potential to surpass him . read that part of the manga again it was after sasuke found his parents dead and itachi made him relive it . the speach afterward

Who cares about discovery when you seal the freaking Nine Tails? No spying in the world is worth giving Konoha's bijuu to f*cking Akatsuki.

And no, he f*cked up Kakashi big time. If not for Tsunade he'd be a drooling mass on the floor.

Itachi cared to much for sasuke that was his weakness i agree but he could of captured naruto from jiraya with the help of kisame

I'm sure he tried to suppress the jutsu as much as possible and did not intend to injure kakashi to that degree

He told Sasuke how to get it, It was SASUKE'S choice, if he wanted to go through with that or not... I don't believe he literally wanted Sasuke to slaughter his friend... He was playing a role, and played it well.. In the end , Sasuke picked the right choice.. gaining power without resorting to murder...

And lol @ the people saying the, Itachi a good guy thing was conceived in part 2.. Kishimoto just about spelled it out for people in databook 2, that Itachi had hidden intentions.... that, on top of the sparing kakashi's life, and "why didn't he just kill me"

Its rediculous to think that such a major part of Sasuke's story line was made up on a whim

?? He said, you CAN, awaken the same eyes as me, And gave him the history lesson on how Uchihas in the past have done it... Itachi was painting a picture of being a villain, a cold blooded killer , and thought it was not the truth, he was hinting to Sasuke that he murdered Shishui for access to this power... Did he REALLY want Sasuke to do such a thing?
There are arguments for and against...

Imo it was a test to see what kind of man he would become, if saving his brother was a mistake, if he'd end up like the rest of uchiha..

Tobi confirms this by saying

Itachi's True plan, was to give Sasuke the ms on THAT day, the day he died...Meaning he never really expected his brother to kill his bestfriend and follow his "path"

This scan alone kills the argument... Itachi's plan was to give Sasuke MS from their fight.. meaning he knew his brother wouldn't kill his best friend..

And in just about every scan, itachi suggests Sasuke has a CHOICE in the matter
He wasn't forcing sasuke to do anything, in fact he CAN'T force sasuke to do anything

His death could of been a backup plan if he didn't kill naruto

You're entitled to your belief, But Itachi wanting Sasuke to commit random murder goes against his very character as a pacifist who loathes killing... Yes he wanted Sasuke to get stronger, but there were many other means for that....Orochimaru for example.. it seems even that was predicted by Itachi... The whole thing with his lust for Uchiha, and after failing to get Itachi , he went after the younger one... tobi hints that even that was in His plan

he also hints that Sasuke leaving the village to obtain power was also in his plan, and that his very death, would make the village welcome him back..

I doubt that sasuke going to oro just strengthened his hatred which itachi wouldn't want

better question, when Sasuke fought Itachi, Itachi told Sasuke that Madara killed and took Izuna's eyes, even though we now know that Tobirama killed Izuna.

itachis evil and doesnt care if innocent people get brutally slaughtered

Itachi ordered Sasuke to kill his best friend because that would be a traumatic enough experience for Sasuke to achieve the mangekyou sharingan. With those eyes Sasuke could have a chance to kill Itachi.
how horrifyingly evil nasty brutal and sadistic. he ordered the murder of an innocent child without batting an eye
I'm sure he tried to suppress the jutsu as much as possible and did not intend to injure kakashi to that degree
no hes just rotten to the core. he could have put kakashi to sleep. he oculd have done anything. he chose to stab him for 72 hours
. he could of killed him but didn't
he ordered kisame to kill kakashi
He was ordered to if he didn't it would be treason and he would be discovered
the alternative is akatsuki gets the nine tails. thats better than blowing your cover?
I don't think he meant for Sasuke to kill his best friend at all actually. I think he was giving him a hint for the future--that he must experience something emotionally traumatic in order to unlock the MS such as losing a loved one.
theres no way sasuke would interpret it that way. at the end of the day sasuke took it literally and ran naruto through with chidori. why take that chance using bullshit psychology? itachis evil

itachis evil. if sasuke gets friends he will kill them. if he doesnt he will still kill them when he loses his mind due to loneliness. theres no way sasuke would interpret that as "maybe i SHOULDNT kill my friends even though it wil enable me to avenge my parents"

it was a sure way to give sasuke power. power that would have made him safer.

being hunted as a traitor and murderer = safer?

told Sasuke how to get it, It was SASUKE'S choice, if he wanted to go through with that or not... I don't believe he literally wanted Sasuke to slaughter his friend
yes he did. iachi is so insane that he tortures sauske for 72 hours and torments him constantly. ordering him to murder people is just one more evil act of despicable brutality. itachi has no reason to believe sauske wont go through with it and did him no favours by suggesting it to him. he could have said nothing and let sasuke get power his own way
In the end , Sasuke picked the right choice.. gaining power without resorting to murder...
actually sasuke did not do any such thing. he DID run naruto through with chidori. he DID htink it killed him and would get him MS. the only interference was by kyuubi who healed narutos wounds. itachi knew this would happen and acted disappointed in sasuke for not getting MS
hat, on top of the sparing kakashi's life, and "why didn't he just kill me"
itachi: kisame take kakashi out. its time for these people to disappear". thats a kill order
But Itachi wanting Sasuke to commit random murder goes against his very character as a pacifist who loathes killing..
.
itachi's no such thing. hes a violent murderer whos totally ok with brutally and savagely tormenting and mindraping inncoent children. a true monster in every sense of the word.
Itachi was painting a picture of being a villain, a cold blooded killer , and thought it was not the truth, he was hinting to Sasuke that he murdered Shishui for access to this power... Did he REALLY want Sasuke to do such a thing?
bringig it up at all gave sauske ideas. ideas he almost fully carried out at VOTE. it was clear manipulation to get sasuke to get MS. if itachi knew there were other ways to get MS he would have said so to his "beloved brother"

Itachi's True plan, was to give Sasuke the ms on THAT day, the day he died...Meaning he never really expected his brother to kill his bestfriend and follow his "path"
sasuke's body could never handle MS at that age. thats just stupid. he'd be blind in a year
Itachi's plan was to give Sasuke MS from their fight.. meaning he knew his brother wouldn't kill his best friend..
too bad. if not for kyuubi stepping in to heal naruto, naruto would be dead. on itachis orders. the fact sasuke failed is irrelevant. the intent was there. the manipulation was there. itachi didnt know sauskes friend would be a superpowered demon

He wasn't forcing sasuke to do anything, in fact he CAN'T force sasuke to do anything
yet itachi did want to force sasuke to serve konoha. he did want sasuke to be famous based on a lie (kilking itachi). he did want to mind control and enslave sasuke to serve konoha.

he also hints that Sasuke leaving the village to obtain power was also in his plan, and that his very death, would make the village welcome him back..
or be executed on sight for being a traitor. just taking down itachi doesnt mean he'd be suddenly welcomed back. sasuke would have to prove he changed. and a hate like that doesnt just vanish. sasuke was so jaded that he had no problem wanting to murder sakura yamato and sai on a whim. forcing sasuke to abandon konoha is counterproductive to itachis goal of making sasuke a hero in the eyes of konoha and doing it the way he did was sneaky and underhanded.

Because Itachi was not conceived as a good character.

Kishimoto pulled the double agent stunt midway through Part 2.

No character that loves Konoha would:

1. Use Tsukuyomi on Konoha's strongest Jounin.
2. Attempt to capture Naruto.
3. Tell someone to kill Konoha's Jinchuuriki.

Gai is stronger than kakashi.

That's what makes me reject his genius status...If Sasuke's best friend didn't turn out to be Kurama's Jinchuuriki...the Sasuke would have murdered a Konoha native-criminal status.(Itachi didn't know Sasuke was going to befriend Naruto)

If it wasn't for Naruto's bond with Tsunade...He would have been hunted by Konoha as a missing nin.

Tsukuyomi torture was going overboard...especially the second time.
