When Naruto was declared to be some "child of prophecy" by the Toad Sage it really killed the whole "hard work and perseverance" thing. The story was supposed to be about a loser kid who opposed his destiny as an outcast demon host to become someone who is acknowledged by everyone for his hard work and courage. But in part 2 we learn that he is destined to become the successor to the SO6P - the most powerful ninja to ever live.

It also ruined the whole message behind Naruto's fight with Neji. The point of that fight was to show that a person can change destiny...Naruto was supposedly destined to be a loser his whole life, but he believed he could change that destiny through hard work. Then down the line Kishi tosses that aside and reveals that his destiny was actually to be some god tier shinobi. Im not saying Naruto didn't work hard for a lot of what he has, but the fact was 'destined' to be powerful the whole time kind of ruins it.

Naruto was always special, he's always been the 9-Tails jinchuriki after all. I think the real message to take away is that you can't decide someone's destiny just by looking at them.

Well.. To be honest he could have just as easily gone down the bad path. So I wouldn't exactly call it his destiny, seeing as prophecies can turn out to be soiled just as easily as they come true.

I think it was more saying that even if you're destined for greatness (like 99% of protagonists are), you still need to work hard to achieve your goals.

I agree. The whole hard work thing was just thrown out in favor of special powurz.

The moral was to change your destiny if you wanted to, why would you want to change your destiny if it involves saving the world :|

Hard work? Yeah right.

I'll admit that Naruto does train, but he mainly has the Kyuubi to thank for getting this far.

From the moment he did this it was obvious he was destined to be overpowered:

Fate is different than Destiny; Fate was what Neji was ranting about. Fate is automatically deciding someone's purposes in life, while Destiny is a flexible, ultimate ambiguity that could mean several opportunities depending on how you strive for it and what phenomenon take place.

Not really.

Fate and Destiny are synonymous. Arguing that they're different is nothing but semantics.

I hear this alot, and it's a good point, but why would you fight a destiny like that? Who's to say the Toad Sage's prophecy was what Naruto's hard work and gutsy personality changed his destiny to? It hasn't exactly been an easy ride from there to here.

lolololol..,fate and destiny are different...lolololol...
ot-he was destined to be a loser but he changed his destiny through hard work...so there is no point to change things again just to show that destiny's a crap.you change ur destiny yet again u create a new destiny, got it.
and that so6p reincarnation thing is bs,he just shares the same ideals of that of sage which even hashi shared, jiraya, etc. as well thus he was trusted by bijuus.and reincarnation bs can never happen in naruto as long as edo-tensei exist, well get my point?

Oh yeah, that destiny crap. Bleh. I keep forgetting about the whole SO6P thing. I have a tendency to inadvertently ignore plot elements I don't like or care about.
