How would dying make him more significant? That doesn't make sense.

With the amount of kage+ level people on the battlefield, Gai has just about 0 reason to sacrifice himself by going full 8 gates (7th gate, I can understand). Nor will it contribute to his character development because there are too many things going on and too many people needing panel time.

It doesn't have to happen right now... i just think we should see what he can do in the 8 gates. The hokages joining the fight are more important now, but i think the other characters should get a chance to use their strongest jutsus later on
