Nagato Uzumaki vs Pain/Pein

It seemed to me that Nagato was much more powerful without the use of the Pain/Pein.

(This thread is made assuming that Pain/Pein is NOT being controlled by Nagato)

Nagato can summon Gedo Mazu so he wins no difficulty.

Nagato wins low-difficulty. It has already been stated, when coming from the host (Nagato) the techniques are on a larger scale of power. No chance for the Peins. Not to mention, Nagato could summon the Gedo, but their is no way that will be needed.

Then why did Nagato use the Pains/Peins for his missions (Hanzo, 9 Nails retrieval)
