To me, it somewhat depends on why he is where he is career wise. If he has no drive or ambition in life and prefers to stay at home and play videogames all day, then I see that as a problem. If, however, he is having a difficult time finding his dream job or is trying to find suitable employment but can't (let's face it, the economy in a lot of countries right now is garbage), then you cannot blame him for that.
I personally couldn't care less if I made more than my boyfriend as long as he is happy with his chosen profession. I've always been a work aholic. I like it and I get paid well for it. There's no shame in that for me.
