1. Do you really think that the elders or Danzo would have allowed the Uchiha's to leave and allow another village control over the Sharingan? No they would not.

2. They would have killed everybody in that village including Sasuke. I don't necessarily think Itachi chose the village over his clan. Itachi chose to protect Sasuke over everything else.

3. The Uchiha's we're going to try and take control of the village, not move out, meaning that they (the established power structure) would have killed the entire clan: including Sasuke.

4. Itachi chose to save Sasuke over anything. If Sasuke saw the village kill his clan, the village would have killed Sasuke to prevent him from coming after them. But if Itachi killed the clan, Sasuke would go after him and Itachi would never kill Sasuke. He would push him to his limit, but never kill him.

This is what Itachi saw: The entire clan would have been wiped out (including Sasuke) or Sasuke survives the massacre.

It wasn't my clan vs my village, the village was an afterthought. It was my brother alive vs. my brother dead.
