Simple reason why Edo Tensei cannot be used in a battle

To do Edo Tensei the user needs DNA of some sort and you cant prepare that during a battle. Unless of course the user is already prepared to fight a battle. However the majority of battles happen spontaneously case in point Itachi vs Kabuto. where kabuto had no idea that Itachi was gunning for him and Kabuto was unprepared. Also all those "zombies" on the battlefield were planned out for the fourth ninja world war. Orochimaru was also prepared with the first and second hokage when invading the leaf village. So there you have it, thats why edo tebsei cannot be used in a battle.

You could always run away and buy some time.. diversions such as shadow clones would also come in handy.
