where are all the ANBU ninja in the war?

supposedly they are 'extremely strong ninja' who are sent on high level missions and carry out assassinations etc. But why are none shown to be fighting in the war?

Probably in their respective villages. They are extremely strong, so that's why they would be at the village. All the other Jounin/Chunnin are fighting so the villages are vulnerable. It is an equally important duty. That or they are fighting without masks.
