Orochimaru is one of the three legendary sannins of konoha. He is said to be the first of the sannins to show special abilities. The third even noted his intelligence from childhood. Even when he invaded konoha, the Sandaime noted that only he could fight on an equal ground with Orochimaru. Orochimaru has never displayed his prowess with the sage mode. Kabuto noted that he possesses senjutsu chakra of the snake, but is unable to use it due to he not finding a good body to possess that ability. He now has zetsu's body and I think with it, he would be able to use his senjutsu well. Orochimaru without his hands (though with kabuto's help) battled Jiraiya and Tsunade, two other sannins. He was able to take on four-tailed naruto and was sad due to being not able to complete the battle and noted the battle intriguing, though he could not form hand seals due to the shikifuujin. Yamato even noted that with both kabuto's (which he taught to be on his side), sakura's, sai's and naruto's help, they don't even stand a chance against the sannin, though he could not use his hands.
The third also saw him as a child prodigy due to his intelligence and reasoning. Even Minato was shocked knowing that Orochimaru removed the seal of the shikifuujin. His intelligence and knowledge in battle is known throughout the five shinobi nations. Now Orochimaru can utilise his senjutsu chakra, with combination of zetsu cells and his hands which he released from the shikifuujin; Orochimaru can be said to be one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful, shinobi alive.
Seriously, who can really battle four tails naruto with hands being sealed by the reaper death God. I know some persons can but I want to hear from Narutobase.
