A courageous mother-of-two has described how she confronted one of the men accused of hacking a young British soldier to death in a London terror attack, telling him he was "going to lose".
Ingrid Loyau-Kennett held her nerve as she stood face-to-face with an Islamic extremist still clutching a bloodied kitchen knife, moments after he allegedly butchered and beheaded a man in a south-east London street, the UK's*Telegraph*reports.
The 48-year-old cub-scout leader, whose tense stand-off with the alleged killer was caught on camera by onlookers, said he told her, "We want to start a war in London tonight".
"It is only you versus many people, you are going to lose, what would you like to do?" she replied.
Ms Loyau-Kennett arrived on the scene at Woolwich shortly after the gruesome daylight killing, jumping off the number 53 bus to check the victim's pulse, she told the newspaper.
She was then confronted by the man's alleged killer, who she described as "distressed" and "upset", as well as another man believed to have been involved in the murder.
Clutching an array of weapons including butchers tools, a knife, a gun and a small axe "to cut the bones", the blood-covered man ordered her to "move away from the body".
"I thought, 'OK, I don’t know what is going on here’ and he was covered with blood," she said.
"I thought I had better start talking to him before he starts attacking somebody else."
Ms Loyau-Kennett said children were starting to leave school at the time of the attack and she thought it was "better having [the weapons] aimed on one person like me rather than everybody there".She kept the killers talking until police arrived on the scene.
British politicians have praised members of the public for "extraordinary bravery" during the 20 minutes it took police to arrive on the scene.
The two men are believed to have mounted the curb in their car and run over the soldier before hacking at him with a knife, removing organs and attempting for 15 minutes to remove his head as terrified onlookers, including children, looked on.
One witness said the men appeared to be "praying like it was a sacrifice" while another told police they had shouted out "Allahu akbar" – God is great – while carrying out the attack.
Armed police shot and wounded the two suspected attackers, who have been taken to separate London hospitals for treatment.
