[Question] Is "Sannin" a ninja rank???

Is "Sannin" a ninja rank??? I thought it was a title given to Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade by Hanzou, calling them the
three legendary ninja...

Hanzou was impressed with the Sannin standing their ground against him, so he gave them the title

For some reason they use it as a rank on the base, but actually Jiraiya, Orochimaru and Tsunade are "the Sannin"

However, Orochimaru, Tsunade and Jiraiya all failed to defeat Hanzou. On the other hand, Nagato was able to kill Hanzou so I wonder what title should've been given to Nagato?
