Sasori is certainly the strongest one of the Sand.

Reasoning:

the Sand is focused on a highest average quality of shinobis due to the shortage of personnel in general. But they are sorely lacking of both fantry shinobis like the ones from more militarized villages (Leaf, Cloud, Rock) and lacks outstanding shinobi like Madara or such. The only shinobi of the Sand Village who were consitered a military force by themselves are Gaara and the Third Kazekage. Now Gaara is beaten by Deidara, who by his own admission is weaker than Sasori; the Third Kazekage is killed by Sasori when he is still in is youth.

Conclusion: Sasori > rest of the Sand Village

Databook says this, for starters.

And besides he is the only one who wasn't defeated in battle (and has even not shown all of his skills, just some of them). Databook aside, common sense says he could never be stronger than top 4 (he's my favorite character but come on, there's no way he'd beat Pain, Tobi or Itachi). If you count Orochimaru as well, then Sasori is number five as Oro beats him (by databook and by Sasori's admission).

I don't understand too well why the databook places Kakuzu on the same level of Kisame and Deidara though, so one could put ist validity into question to be fair.

Being strongest from sand is not that big of a feat, since they have always been the weakest village; the only shinobis who worth to mention from there are Gaara, Sasori, 3rd kazekage, and maybeeeee 4th kazekage and Chiyo.

Gaara was weaker than Deidara, who was weaker than Sasori, by the time he was elected Kazekage. If, and only if, Gaara improved dramatically after the Shukaku got extracted (no evidence of this at all) he could rival Sasori.

gaara is actually. even in a neutral location i think gaara can handle sasori with flight and sand hail. but no denying sasori is hax. he just got bad luck facing his two worst matchups in chiyo and sakura chan

lol at the fail use of powerscaling. gaara sacrificed much of his chakra stopping the village from being damaged during the fight AND refused to ask for his bijuu to lend him power since shukaku being released would destroy shit.

you forgot first two kazekages even if they are featless, and pakura. moreover i consider mist and stone weaker than them.

how do you know? we didnt spend as much time in the sand village as konoha so we know far less about them
also the sand fought against the stone mist and leaf in all three world wars

horrible logic. gaara held back shukaku to protect his village AND deidara had the perfect set of abilities to counter the gaara defence. sasori would be utterly fu cking powerless against sand tsunami and quicksand. third kazekage was likely ambushed and poisoned by sasori THEN kidnapped. and we dont know if deidara was being honest about sasoris strength when even kabuto didnt meet real sasori

All pure speculation. What we know as far is that Gaara lost. True, he was tricked into wasting his chakra, but then again it's also just as true that Gaara had a huge advantage in fighting in the desert. Simply put, as far as we know Gaara and Sasori are on different leagues... Sasori was a rival even Orochimaru recognized, Gaara is nowhere near sannin level.

Gaara may have surpassed Sasori nowadays, but as far as we know as of now he didn't and Sasori is still the strongest shinobi ever born in the sand. If the manga adds something to that, I'd be glad to listen since I like Gaara just as much as Sasori, but as of now things are at that.
