Will You Join The 78,000 Planning To Live On Mars?
It’s been just over 2 and a half weeks since the nonprofit organization Mars One opened its application process for the first settlers on the Red Planet, and already about 78,000 applications have been received.
Mars One hopes to put 4 people on Mars by 2023, with two more arriving every two years.
Bas estimates that landing 4 people on Mars will cost roughly $6 billion. The Netherlands-based organization plans to pay most of the bills by a large-scale TV event that will document the astronauts’ training process in addition to their first years inhabiting Mars.
To apply, submit a 1-minute video explaining the motivation and desire to become a settler on the Red Planet to the Mars One website. Applicants must be 18 years or older.
The application fee ranges from $5 to $75 depending on the overall wealth of the applicant’s home country. U.S citizens pay $38 to apply.
Mars One has received applications from citizens of more than 120 countries.
When the application deadline passes, reviewers will select 50 to 100 candidates who will then be whittled down to a list of 28 to 40 candidates by 2015.
This group will then be split into groups of 4. After a seven-year training period, an audience vote will determine which of these groups will be the first people to walk on Mars.
