I think Gaara would still take this, Neji then has the same problem as Lee. No ninjutsu or genjutsu to fall back on since close combat simply wouldn't work. Plus he doesn't have the 8 gates to fall back on, Gaara could simply hide in his sand until Neji is tired out then go in for the kill. Gaara was on a whole different level at that point in the series compared to the other gennin.

Am I the only one that thinks Neji wins? Gaara's sand wasn't shown to be that powerful back in the Chuunin exams like it was in the Sasuke Retrieval arc, so Neji can block it with Rotation. Tenten said that Neji was the strongest Genin alive even after seeing what Gaara did to Lee, I guess you can argue though that she was being a bit of a fangirl, but still Lee said that Neji was stronger than him without the gates so that means Neji kept up with Unweighted Lee the same one that blitzed Gaara's sand defense so I wouldn't say that it's impossible for Neji to get past his defense.

Nah, there are scarce few who think otherwise as well.

The thing is, Gaara's sand was still effective in blocking attacks, including most taijutsu. Neji could still block Gaara's attacks with his rotation, but he would be on the defensive the entire time with it. He said that he was one of the strongest genin, at least from the leaf.

Neji could react to Lee back then, but that didn't mean that he could physically move as fast as Lee could. Back then, Neji had a 3 in speed and Lee had a 4, meaning that their speed levels were different.

Lee and Neji are both taijutsu users. Taijutsu and speed correlate with each other. In order to beat someone in a taijutsu fight you have to be on par with their speed, as shown by Sasuke vs Lee. Neji also kept up with 0 Tail Naruto who blitzed 2 Toome Sasuke. So we atleast know that their speed is comparable definatly faster than 2 Toome Sasuke can see.

Ok lets say Neji does not get stomped but puts up a good fight, what does he do when Gaara encases himself like VS Sasuke. Sasuke only managed to pierce him with chidori, a stabbing and penetration attack. Neji's gentle fist isnt going to be able to do that and he doesn't have Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm yet. Then he will likely be facing the Shukaku or partially transformed Gaara.

I will say he could put up a decent fight but Gaara would still win in the end.

Neji's speed primarily comes from the use of his hands. He can move his hands very quickly. Granted he is quick on his feet, being able to keep up with even KN0 Naruto, its not enough for his to outspeed Gaara's sand, which took Lee removing his weights to do, and he had a 4 in speed back then. After the chuunin exams his speed was bumped up to a 4, but that was after the chuunin exams and the people we are talking about are the CE genins.

Neji beat Lee in all of there fights, that's why he learned the gates so he could prove that a genius of hardwork can beat a natural born one.

Guess I'm siding with the popular vote of Gaara here. Sand armor alone might cause Neji some trouble if it works similar to Kidomaru's golden armor. Neji would be able to hold off for quite a bit considering he can basically cover himself with a coat of chakra (even though this might be more of a SRA feat) but eventually you would think that this would run out. Now Gaara's sand armor is also supposed to take a toll on him too mind you. He's not bad on evading given his performance against Kidomaru's onslaught, even if you power down a bit for the arc change. It's nigh even.. sounds more like a battle of attrition. I'm trying not to use many feats for post-preliminary matches either (as in no using the sand dome like against Sasuke, things like that).
