People don't choose homosexuality. There's no good reason for someone to choose to be gay. It's just a naturally occurring phenomena. On that note:

The SparksNotes page explains the symbolism as well as I can. There is a plentitude of symbols. The most important one is probably the pigs head ("the Lord of the Flies"). It represents the inherent bad and desire to do wrong hidden inside all of us, which is exposed as the pig's head rots away.
