Garry Flot, a spokesman for the local police department, said details surrounding the incident are still unclear but "we believe 12 people were shot," including a child aged 10 to 12.

Flot said that no one was killed and that three to four people were in hospital for surgery. He declined to provide further details.

Local broadcaster WWL-TV reported that the shooting took place at a Mother's Day parade and three suspects were believed to have been involved.

UPDATE

Nineteen people have been hurt in a Mother's Day parade shooting in New Orleans, prompting the mayor to call for an end to "relentless" violence on the streets of the southeastern US city.

Those wounded by the eruption of gunfire on Sunday afternoon included 17 adults and two 10-year-olds, police say."Many of the victims were grazed (some by bullets that ricocheted)," it said.

"At this point, there are no fatalities, and most of the wounds are not life-threatening.

"The injured children - a boy and a girl - suffered graze wounds and are in good condition while a man and a woman were still in surgery late Sunday.

Police are searching for a motive for the shooting and have appealed to the public to come forward with any clues. A $US2,500 ($A2,508) reward has been offered to information leading to the arrest and indictment of those responsible

This kinda shit is not new in New Orleans. People get shot everyday. The only reason this made it to national news is because it's Mother's Day and they can make it extra dramatic

And it was not a parade, it was a second line. As in, an unorganized event.
