Its a possible reason why kishi didn't want yamato in the war. For two reasons actually but one reason more than the other. He had amazing potencial as crazy as it may seem. Yes, he could of been a parcial trump card for Allied shinobi force.
Thinking about term one he would of been a credit to the battle field in terms of elements. Because of his mokutonyou may know, it can absorb chakra, now I'm not sure (can't remember) if yamato gained this ability when he obtained m but that's not all. He would be both offensive and defensive. The odd things like sheilding the wounded wirth mokuton sheilds and pirsons to group the enemies up and crush them. He would of even been a help in the kin and gin fight obviously. That's one reason why kishi left him out and made him look like a total sucker before the war even started. He wanted us to conjure up an image in our heads that since he was capture like that, that he would be useless in the war. On the conturary.
The biggest reason of all is the juubi. I know there is no way that yamato can control the juubi however we know that juubi has the body of mokuton in addition we have also seen madara and obito restrain him and parcially control the juubi (though they have way higher chakra reserves especially madara. Being edo). What if naruto supplied a mass of kyyubi chakra to yamato? He could potencially lock the juubi more effectively than obito (he specializes in this sort of thing plus obito doesn't really have knowledge on how to surprwss tailed beast like hashirama). Yamato would of been a decent if not better than decent counter for the uchihas lock on juubi.
