This week Obito stated that it was not Rin's death that made him go on a rampage and start the shinobi war.
Why do i say that he might be helping the Sage (assuming that the Sage is alive talked to him one way or another; probably through the Gedo Mazo or not necessary through the mazo but we can be sure that if Minato could place his chakra to be able to protect Naruto in key-moments, the sage could have done it 10 times more easy):
1. He shows an obvious interest in Naruto's thoughts and words.
2. He recently said that Rin is not the one who made him start the war.
3. Early in the series he had 3 or 4 masks, the last one representing a rinnegan with 3 tomoes. Through a very shallow water i want to say that this might be a hint to the Sage's influence on him.
4. It's obvious he will betray Madara when the right moment comes if he comes alive from versing Kukishi.
5. We can clearly see that he knows a lot more about many things; more than we could expect.
6. He might want to make Naruto discover his true potential; he clearly forced him to do that by Talking to him and he had like millions of times when he could have captured him.
Don't flame; it's just a presumption which came to my mind like 5 minutes ago.
