This thread is basically a BATTLE OF THE BRAINS!!
To see who the base think is the smartest amongst those on this list. The reason these are the shinobi being used are because these are the shinobi that have been pointed out in the manga as being top of the line in terms of genius. The Contestants are as follows:

This is not a contest to decide who is the strongest of the 5. This is a contest to see who the base believes is the smarter of the 5. Try not to let personal biased get in the way of your choices, and when I say this I am talking more toward the Itachi and Minato fans out there.

I would say Orochimaru may be the smartest out of them all =D

Itachi Uchiha

Itachi was born into the Uchiha clan and was praised by all as the best of his generation, and a genius above all others. Even by the standards of the battle-adept Uchiha clan, Itachi's prowess far outshone their own.
Itachi was wise beyond his years and spent much of his time researching the history of the village from the writings their ancestors left behind. Itachi was never limited to the view of his own clan but worried about the fate of the village as a whole.
At age 7, Itachi graduated from the Academy at the top of his class after only one year, MASTERED the Sharingan at age 8, passed the Chūnin Exams at age 10, enrolled in ANBU half a year later and became captain by 13.
Itachi has been shown to be analytical and perceptive, being able to deduce the inner workings and weaknesses of powerful techniques, even while under pressure.
Itachi is a "That Genius" that is born once in a generation. He battle prowess is top notch, as he is able to break down any jutsu to find its weakness and he also has top notch battle tactics with allow him to compete with the likes of Nagato, Kakashi, Guy, and Jiraiya.
One of my favorite qualities about itachi is the fact that he doesnt underestimate any of his opponents. He takes them all seriously with a calmness and humility.

a master in terms of Genjutsu
a master in terms of Kinjutsu (which is evident as he had many scrolls in his home containing forbidden techniques)
a master in terms of Bukijutsu (which is shown when he welds Enma)
a master in terms of Fuinjutsu (sealing)
etc.
Which means he is well versed in shinobi combat and can fight in any situation, no matter what the handicap.
Hiruzen also had LEARNED AND MASTERED every jutsu that exist in the Hidden Leaf Village.
This means that hiruzen was able to not only master Elemental Recomposition, but also Spatial Recomposition. And the fact that Hiruzen mastered and learned all jutsu in the leaf would also suggest that hiruzen can use all elements, which would add to his genius because the only other people who could use more than 3 elements have a doujutsu (special eye jutsu) or a KKG.

He graduated from the Academy at the age of ten, and was added to a genin team under the guidence of Jiraiya, who took a special interest in Minato, and took him on as an apprentice. Jiraiya even believed that Minato might be the Child of the Prophecy, someone who would someday save the world.
After seeing a technique once, he could correctly deduce the basic mechanics behind it, such as the strengths and weaknesses.
During difficult events, he was still capable of maintaining his composure, assessing the situation, and devising appropriate plans of action. When he fought against Obito, he was able to determine that his opponent didn't want to drag on their fight as he could not keep Kurama summoned for very long, as well as quickly coming up with a method of counter-attacking.

Orochimaru was identified as a genius shinobi and a once-in-a-generation prodigy. During his lifetime, his associations with powerful shinobi and groups, such as his tutoring by the Third Hokage and his stints with both the Root and Akatsuki organisations, as well as his later solo exploits into gaining knowledge, allowed him to develop and gain access to vast amounts of information.
Manipulation
He is noted as a master manipulator. He was also able to manipulate the entire village of Sunagakure into invading Konoha, by posing as the Fourth Kazekage without anyone noticing, having killed the real one weeks before the invasion. He was capable of manipulating multiple people into becoming his willing pawns and guinea pigs for his experiments, using a combination of manipulation, insight into a victim's past and the promise of power to gain their loyalty. The greatest examples of this are Kabuto and Kimimaro, who idolised the Sannin and showed nothing but absolute loyalty and respect for him.

Due to his desire to obtain all known ninja techniques, Orochimaru developed extensive research work throughout his years, performing experiments on multiple individuals and on himself to comprehend their abilities or develop new ones. Such examples include him discovering the workings of Jūgo's clan's abilities and his subsequent development of the cursed seal, the modifications done to his own body, the extensive research done to Hashirama Senju's cells as well as integrating them into Danzō Shimura, amongst many other test subjects.
Kabuto once noted, that Orochimaru could even protect the cellular structure of his experiments, preventing anyone from gaining knowledge from them.
Due to this research, he is easily capable of deducing the workings of an enemy's techniques and fighting style. As a researcher, Orochimaru is also a very skilled teacher, being capable of recognising a person's potential and bring it out in relatively short amounts of time. The greatest example of this is his training of Sasuke, he was able to develop sasuke's abilities to the point where he was capable of going toe-to-toe against several high-level shinobi, including various Kage-level opponents.
Immortality
Orochimaru's research has also allowed him to develope jutsu that ultimately make him immortal. From his oral rebirth to his revival with curse seals. Orochimaru can not be killed.

Honestly, I dont even think Shikaku needs me to back up his genius.lol The only thing in the manga that he is known for is his Genius.lol
Shikaku is renowned for his intellect. He had carried on his family's tradition of keeping a medical encyclopaedia filled with various information, which was so useful/advanced that even Tsunade praised him for it.
He regularly defeated his son, who himself is a genius with an IQ of over 200 at shōgi, without shikamaru realising that the game was even lost.
During the Fourth Shinobi World War, his years of experience and skills were put to great use. He was appointed the Chief Strategist of the Allied Shinobi Forces and showed himself to be a shrewd tactician and strategist, able to quickly and calmly analyse a great deal of information, anticipate actions and use it to quickly formulate or reformulate highly effective plans.
His skills once again became useful when the remainder of the Allied Shinobi Forces assembled to face the Ten-Tails, as he was able to put together a strategy utilising all the villages various ninjutsu, in mere moments, even though they had only recently shared information about their techniques with him.
