I agree, madara is not, itching or minatos smart! Even Kakashi is way more analytical then madara! I feel in Naruto that smart and being analytical are key to this!

Fact, the Nara clan is known for their smartness and shadow techniques. Who else in the story can come up with so many different moves, sort all out and choose the best of all those moves to make and his strategy will work out immediately. Shikaku has only the edge of experience above his son and that will put him as the second smartest in the story. Itachi and Nagato followed Tobi all the way in Akatsuki and were not able to figure out any of his plans, Shikamaru just saw him in a few minutes and Tobi thought of eliminating him immediately because he saw through his plans in just moments.
I'll even place Kakashi above Itachi in smartness, as for Madara, all I've seen is his brute strenght with the sus+kyu and his crazy gamble with obito, Naruto has impressed me more than him. Minato, Itachi and Kakashi are pretty smart but not as Shikamaru.

It can't be Orochimaru. His impatience and lack of planning caused him to lose against Itachi. Also, the sadistic pleasure he found in having the Shodai and Nidaime Hokage toy with the Sandaime Hokage caused him to lose in the end (when he could have won in a simple one-on-one fight).

It seems you fail to understand the context that Oro was using the word "Genius".

Oro was talking about sasuke's talent, Not his intellect, if you would stop fanboying sasuke, you would of noticed. Judging from the databooks, Sasuke only scores a 3.5 (little unfair, Should of been given a 4)

While People like hiruzen, Tsunade, Shikamaru, Shikaku, itachi and Oro all score 5's, Far high that sasuke's.

Even in the viz manga, the word genius was used. If he was really talking about talent, then why would he use the word genius ? And again i am not surprised when orochimaru says that. Sasuke owned orochimaru in the same genjutsu itachi used. His intelligence could also be seen in his fight against deidara and itachi.
