A very popular topic of discussion since the details of the duel between Hashirama Senju & Madara Uchiha at the Valley of the End were revealed; has been how Madara actually survived the battle, especially given Hashirama's comments on how he (a sensor) was certain that Madara was in fact dead. The most obvious & common conclusion is that Madara used the kinjutsu; Izanagi to deceive Hashirama, however, taking into consideration several excerpts from the manga I believe this theory to be flawed.

The first inconsistency I noticed in this theory lies within the jutsu itself & its workings. Izanagi is at base a genjutsu that affects the user only & not the opponent, in nigh every instance we have seen the jutsu used, the abnormality caused by the jutsu was obvious & immediately noticed by those who witnessed it (Chapter 479), with the exception of Obito's usage which was masked by the aftermath of the explosion of Konan's tags along with his space time jutsu; Kamui. With that said a it is extremely unlikely that a shinobi as powerful & as experienced as Hashirama who is also a sensor would have been deceived so completely by a jutsu that for the most part is obvious in a setting that offered little distraction at the moment, regardless of his exhaustion.

The second inconsistency I noticed was in the requirements for Izanagi's usage; according to Obito (Chapter 510) Izanagi can only be used by those who possess both Senju & Uchiha DNA, this is supported by the fact that the only two shinobi seen to have used this jutsu have both met these requirements. While it is known that Madara did acquire Hashirama's DNA during the duel, it is very unlikely that he had a chance to implement this DNA in the heat of battle, furthermore it is even more unlikely that the effects of the DNA would be that instantaneous, as we have seen in previous chapters, it takes time & training for the properties of the Senju DNA to take affect, let alone be properly utilized. With that said it is highly illogical for Madara to have been able to acquire, inject, & then use Hashirama's DNA while engaged in a duel to the death without Hashirama noticing any of his actions & be none the wiser after years to speculate on the happenings of said battle.

The third & most substantial inconsistency I have noticed in this theory is the cost of using Izanagi. Like its sister jutsu Izanami, Izanagi's usage requires the permanent sacrifice of a Sharingan. This cost is grave enough to affect even the eyes of a Uchiha resurrected by Edo Tensei as seen with Itachi during his battle against Kabuto. Despite Edo Tensei having lifted the restrictions that the Mangekyo Sharingan placed on Itachi, even it could change the aftermath of the Uchiha kinjutsus usage. Given that we know both of Madara's eyes (technically Izuna Uchiha's) survived for many years to evolve into the Rinnegan & then subsequently be implanted in Nagato Uzamaki, we can conclude that Madara has in fact never used Izanagi before. While we have yet to see if a Uchiha who possesses the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan (which we know is immune to the restrictions of its predecessor) is bound by the same penalty for the Uchiha kinjutsus usage as a common Uchiha, I highly doubt that is the case. If Madara had the ability to use Izanagi with no ill effect then why would he have waited until he was defeated to use it & not before when it could have affected the outcome of the battle.

With this information provided by the manga, I think it is clear that Izanagi is not the answer to Madara's survival at the Valley of the End, which surely will come into play in later chapters after Hashirama & the other Kages arrive to enter the fray. Maybe it was another jutsu, or perhaps there is yet another villain lurking in the shadows, either way; we will have to wait & see.

Really though, Madara probably didn't use Izanagi...that or there's something else going on we don't know about.

Thank you captain obvi

Sorry guys, I tried using Kage Mane no Jutsu to stop the spam comment, but my finger slipped and he pushed the reply button.

I want to say that there was something more to this genjutsu idea, because the genjutsu was used on a powerful shinobi like Hashirama. Even if you believed to succeed in a victory, you should still be able to tell whether or not a genjutsu was used and dispel it. With chakra like Hashirama, this should be like a finger snap. However, there's that part with Tobirama reminiscing how he found Hashirama collapsed with Madara's body nowhere to be found. How did that play out? There's too many inconsistencies.
