This is going to be me clarifying what exactly Sage Mode is, some people may already know this and others may disagree but as always with my threads you should read everything before posting a critism. I say this because there are many times where people will post talking about something I already covered in the thread and it is annoying to repeat myself. And if you openly disagree with something I state to be fact be sure not to simply say you disagree but also if you can post a scan from the manga showing how/why I am wrong. That way it isnt conjecture.

What is Sage Mode?
To start this off I want to define exactly what Sage Mode is. Sage Mode is the transformation that takes place when you begin to incorporate Nature Chakra into your body, mixing it with your yin/spirit and yang/body energies.
Now this itself is Sage Mode and keep in mind that everyone we have seen is infact a Sage. Sage Mode can then be broken down further into 2 catagories, Perfect & Imperfect Sages.

What is Perfect Sage Mode?
Now Perfect Sage Mode is a little different from Normal Sage Mode and this is where alot of people get confused. Perfect Sage Mode is drawing in Nature Energy/Chakra and perfectly mixing it with your own yin and yang energies in order to create Sage Chakra.
Now the tell-tell sign of an Imperfect would be the alterations you see in them, Much like Jiraiya who took on frog like attributes when attempting Sage Mode, or those poor souls who were turned into frog statues when failing at using Sage Mode. But this is caused by the ninja not being able to perfectly balance the Nature Energies with his own yn and yang energies with those who absorb too much Chakra being turned to stone.

Well it doesn't mean too much but it does clarify a few things:
Again the ONLY tell-tell sign of an Imperfect Sage is whether or not they have a transformation in which they take on inhuman like attributes.
- Perfect Sage Mode is not reflected by HOW one gathers the Nature Chakra but rather how one balances it with there own Energies. Thus Jiraiya using Ma and Pa to gather Nature Chakra for him does NOT reflect him being an Imperfect or Perfect Sage.
- Pigmentation or Discoloration does NOT reflect someone being an Imperfect Sage but rather signifies that one is a Sage. All Sages, Perfect of otherwise, will have pigmentation.
- Abilities gained from SM does not reflect whether someone is Perfect or Not.
Again the ONLY tell-tell sign of an Imperfect Sage is whether or not they have a transformation in which they take on inhuman like attributes.

Naruto shows that he is a Perfect Sage by displaying the pigmentation from Sage Mode while not displaying any Toad-Like transformation.

We see that Jiraiya is not a Perfect Sage but is rather an Imperfect Sage based on the transformations that happens to him during Sage Mode.

The same goes for Kabuto who grows horn-like appendages when entering Sage Mode.

Clarification
Now keep in mind that the ONLY limiting factor for becoming a Perfect Sage is being able to perfectly combine your Yin and Yang Energies with the Nature Energies. But there is something else to this:
You need to have ALOT of chakra to be able to use Sage Mode, which makes sense because if Nature Chakra/Energy is such a powerful thing then it would seem that when absorbing it you would need alot of chakra to be order to balance it out.
*Example: Ninja Chakra would be compared to a stream, Nature Chakra being as potent as it is would be like an ocean, and thus the more chakra you have the easier it would be to balance out the immense power of Nature Chakra.*
With that the 2 Perfect Sages have already shown to have immense chakra reserves. Naruto we already all know to have huge chakra reserves even without the kyubi, although it doesnt hurt, and Hashirama, well I dont think I have to point out all the feats he has performed to shows his Chakra Supply.
While Kabuto and Jiraiya, although they do have ample chakra reserves dont have anywhere near Naruto's and Hashiramas kind of Chakra. And thus we can see that the more chakra you have the better your chances for being able to become a Perfect Sage.
*The connection has been made that since Naruto and Hashirama are both from the Senju lineage that perhaps Perfect Sage Mode is something only a Senju could obtain. But this is not the case, the only thing necessary to become a Perfect Sage would be a huge chakra reserve. Which hypothetically puts Uchiha in the realm as being able to attain perfect Sage Mode, that along with the 3rd Raikage who displayed immense chakra reserve and Hiruzen along with some others. And thus this is not a Senju-Only kind of thing*
Another thing i would want to point out is that there is NO difference between Imperfect and Perfect Sages. One can argue that a Perfect Sages Senjutsu would be more powerful than an Imperfect Sages and even with that Granted there is no other difference. There is no real drawback from being an Imperfect Sage other than the Transformation.

Conclusion
What have we learned today?
- Sage mode of composed of 2 Parts, Perfect and Imperfect Sage Mode.
- The distinguishing factor of a Sage Mode is the pigmentation around the eyes.
- The only distinguishing factor of an Imperfect Sage is the transformation that takes place when entering Sage Mode.
- Perfect and Imperfect Sage Mode is determined by the ninjas ability to balance Nature Energies with his own.
- Having large Chakra Reserves increases ones ability to balance Nature Chakra with their own and thus increase there chances of being able to attain Perfect Sage Mode.
- Perfect Sage Mode is not limited or related to the Senju Blood Line or any blood line rumored to come from the Rikudo.
