Many questions we're born about this sage.
Please read this till the end because the end contains the most important and interesting stuff.
What do we know exactly about him or his reasons ? Almost nothing, just what was stated by Naruverse chars and that's: he created dojutsu, controled the juubi and tried to create peace among people.
If i remember well he was just a monk and nothing else until the day he controlled the Juubi, The day he awakened the Rinnegan.
We actually have no evidence that he had the rinnegan before becoming a "jinjunikii"
Let's sort it:
Juubi -> Sharingan (9 tomoes one)
Hyuga Clan -> Byakugan
The Elder Son -> Spiralled eye
Sage -> probably had Byakugan
What we know and which can also be discovered by reading this image is that in order to get rinnegan you first must have sharingan, but in order to have sharingan you must have been from the ancestors bloodline which had an ancient form of sharingan similar to Naruto's Uzumaki clan sign.
So, it was impossibru for the sage to have either Sharingan since it is a demon eye, nor the rinnegan since you are forced to had sharingan first.
Also compare the rinnegan colour with the byakugan
Now that all of these we're sorted out.
Here comes the questions of main interest:
1.Was the Sage just desperate for power? Why not kill the Juubi instead he decided to control it.
2.Can the juubi be killed?
3.Is the juubi indeed a life force that has no soul and it's being controlled by distructive instincts?(as Obito/ Madara stated in previous chapters)
3.1. If so then Naruto's talk no jutsu will not work on it?
4.Was the sage in the same situation after becoming "Jinjuikii" as the others contemporans with Naruto? Disrespected,feared, left alone?
5. Did he feel negative emotions born by his friends seeing him as a threat ?
How can someone divide something in 9 parts ? What happened with the tenth part otherwise it's not even close to being equal.
Again we go to the eyes - Juubi - 9 tomoes sharingan, ==> 9 Tailed beasts, all the necessary circles on the rinnegan and on the sharingan of the beast
Actually the rinnegan looks even weaker than the sharingan. Why? Because it's the same pattern just different colour and no tomoes.
Now, please observe closely as the Elder son's eyes are exactly the representation of one Tomoe from the beast eyes. It's exactly the same whirl pattern just at a different size(look closely). It may take a while to clearly notice it.

7. Was the sage indeed after peace ?
8. Did he change after eating the juubi and that's what forced him to divide it in 9 beast? Each representing one tomoe?
9. Is the circle in the middle of the sharingan and in the middle of the rinnegan representing the juubi since the 9 tomoes go for the other tailed beasts ?
10.Why is the Byakugan an completely greyish blue eye with no patterns ? Not even a middle circle?
11.Could it actualy be that the 2 sons be exactly the Juubi and Life ? Juubi trying to take control. How else? since everyone tried to fight it. By becoming human.
12. Did The sage actualy created dojutsu ? Since he didn't have rinnegan from the start, but the Sharingan was in the 10 tails from the start
13. There is a possibility that 10 tails has a name, it is possible that he was misstreated when he was young and was missunderstood like Naruto in his childhood, all he wanted was to get some attention.
14. The 9 tails had a child form => 10 tails childform?
15.Why was Kurama hard to control early on? because of it's power ? No, mainly because of the hatred he carried towards humans, why is the juubi hard to control ?
