Defending Obito's character
Many people seem to see Obito as a crybaby with bad motivations, but this is often due to misconceptions and not reading closely into the manga, I'm going to change that once and for all. It may be a very long read but if you don't like Obito or his motivations, this is a must read.
Tobi has many feats, feats people seem to have forgotten since he took of the mask. Many would argue that he wouldn‘t be able to these things without Madara which is true, but the way he used Madara’s name to manipulate events and the contingency plans he made to get to this point even with the setbacks he faced is impressive. Even if it was Madara’s plan, Madara didn’t manipulate Nagato and Yahiko, Obito did, Madara didn’t manipulate Sasuke as a back-up for Nagato even with his knowledge of his role in the destruction of his beloved clan, Obito did, Madara didn’t fool a number of S-class ninjas and manipulate all of their missions and roles from the shadows, Obito did. And so on, you don’t need me to tell you everything. Madara did give him instructions, but being told something and executing it is different, even with all of the setbacks he has had, a key one being the rinnegan user they had trained for years betraying them, they are still just steps away from fulfilling the moon’s eye plan. Madara himself showed his faith in Obito’s intellect in chapter 601.
It’s been said Obito didn’t have his own beliefs to begin with. This is wrong, Obito’s beliefs were one of the fundamental lessons of the series, and it was Naruto’s first lesson and Kakashi’s nindo
Obito’s original idea was actually rather radical and was in direct opposition to the way the shinobi world worked. He seemed to know there was little hope for chaange and was prepared to make a radical move like crushing those 'real shinobi'. Obito’s ideas with regards to his original nindo have also developed; he seems to have lost hope in the shinobi world’s ability to change this mentality, and through his adoption of Madara’s ideals he has developed his own philosophy on how the world works, what you see on this page isn’t something Madara told him.
Obito gave up his eye in the hope that he would protect Rin as the protection of comrades is a key part of his philosophy, and on the page itself, Kishimoto even stated in Naruto chapter 243 that despair had turned into hope, and he truly believed and hoped that this resonated with Kakashi, through his eye in Kakashi, he believed in a better future as he stated himself.
So to see Kakashi kill Rin through his own eye made him lose hope. Why? Both he and Kakashi had both abandoned Rin, the philosophy he held to was broken by the very thing he wished to use to uphold it. Obito explains this himself before and after taking off the mask.
Kakashi and by extension Obito failed in their mission, something that was doomed all along if Rin theories are to be believed.Through Madara’s words he started to see it as an endless cycle, first the White Fang and now the very personal occurrence of Rin’s death and decided to take him up on his offer to change it.
Many people ask why Obito didn’t kill Kakashi and/or find out the reason. Well, for one thing Kakashi was in the story before Obito or Tobi existed in canon, so it would be pretty problematic to say the least. Also, like I said before, he thought he could truly have gotten through to Kakashi, and that there was finally hope and to see that crushed made him lose faith in his friend. However, he also sees Kakashi as a victim of this reality, to him, Kakashi is part of the circle that keeps creating trash.
One thing people seem to forget is that Obito stated Kakashi will be in the dream world too, not just Rin, meaning that he doesn’t just want the dream world so he can **** an imaginary Rin, he wants to be back with his friends the way it was, where they can be out of danger.
Obito isn’t just here to bring back Rin, on the page after he said he wanted to create a world where Rin was alive, he said himself that he wanted to change the fate of this world, would Rin being alive really cause that? He wanted to change the world or in reference to his older point, ‘crush those so called real shinobi’.
Onto the reason question, what reason would change how he felt about it? Obito remarked on the futility of excuses himself, he probably knew, people were after Rin, that's why protecting her was so important to him
Obito is quite obviously the opposite of Naruto. Obito has lost hope, Naruto is eternally filled with it and so on. What is so interesting is that Obito was essentially Naruto. I think Kishi is going for Harvey Dent feel with Obito, Naruto being the hero is meant to be incorruptible but with Obito, Kishi has presented a what if scenario. Obito is trying to make Naruto feel what he felt when he failed to protect his friends and philosophy by killing them in front of him. The fact that Obito wants to create peace yet starts a war seems contradictory, and is, but the reason for this is deep-rooted in the history of Naruto. Obito is the best representative of the elder son’s ideals as Sasuke is now good. I’m sure you guys know the story of the Sage’s sons, and Naruto who will eventually find peace through love, again perfectly antagonises Obito. The notion of peace through power and force is somewhat contradictory in itself and Obito is meant to show the flaws in this ideology, this conflict in ideals has been made obvious in the last few chapters with the exposition between them.
In conclusion, (thanks if you read it all before this point), Obito isn't a crybaby or emo at all. He had beliefs that were precious to him, and was given hope that they will be upheld, and instead were crushed by the very thing he wanted to uphold it with. Not just that, Obito was a top notch villain for most people before the mask came off and had many feats, so why should that change because he has had in depth characterization that people seem to miss. There are all sorts of asspulls and plot holes explaining his existence but this has nothing to with the quality of the character, Kishi clearly rushed the flashback and didn't explain things as well as he could have.
