I've always thought of myself as being a strong person but now I'm starting to question that. I've been smoking for years and can't seem to slow down. I promised myself I wouldn't end up like my uncle (he died from lung cancer and a brain tumor) but I fear a similar fate if I continue. When he died I promised myself I would never touch a cigarette I kept that promise (kind of).

Instead of cigarettes I smoke b&m's, blunts, and joints. So I actually do worst than cigarettes. Anyways I tend to think about things too much so I often stress myself with my daily problems (trivial compared to things some people endure everyday) but meaningful to me. When ever I stress over something one of these three things provides instant temporary stress relief, the problem is I'm stressed all the time. I've grown so dependent on the three that I have panic attacks whenever I'm stressed and don't have them.

I just want to break my dependence on these things. I use them to escape reality and my problems when i should be facing my problems head on. Does anyone have any advice on how to get off these habits? The patch didn't work btw. I fear it's slowly growing into a addiction. What do you think I should do?

Well, my mom had lung cancer, and it is the scariest shit imaginable. Smoking is one hell of an addiction. If you have a nicotine addiction, you can try Nicorette (seeing as the patch didn't work).

You would be surprised the number of students in college use drugs to escape the burden their school work puts on them.

Do whatever you want to do, in my personal belief nothing will take your life before it's your time :)

Two of the top stress relievers are working out, and laughing. Those two alone should be quite a bit to lower your smoking to a manageable level. I'm talking about an actual workout not this PE stuff, thats for them tubby kids.

Try the gum.
Seen someone puke his guts out from the patch's and he ended up smoking anyway.
Other than that it's just self control. Weed and booze don't help either because tobacco goes so well with both.
You could try switching to dip if you're that worried.

If you go the weed route to kick the addiction then try vaping, it's much better for your lungs.

Chewing tobacco. Comes in pouches or raw and gives you the nicotine you need without messing up your lungs. A lot of guys I know started dipping to quit smoking. Cheaper too.

Doesn't that stuff rot your gums?

honestly bro you need something else to be commited to, and then in your head run a simulation of how smoking is taking it away from you and you wana fight and fight hard to get that thing and slowly push smoking away. and get a tattoo to remind yourself of that commitment. a small one.

Bro a tattoo is a bit excessive here.
Here's another reason if youre looking for one. Most chicks who don't smoke wont date a guy who smokes. Therefore less tobacco=more bitchs.
And chew really only gets bad if you don't brush your teeth. You should be brushing twice a day anyway.

Yeah it works all the time
OT: I also smoke and I wish I never started its so hard to quit, smoking really sucks now I'm regretting, it also puts a huge crack on ur wallet, the more u depend on stuff like these more likely ur stress will increase rather than decreasing

Find a local club (or even go out of your way to form one) that has regular activities. A lot of hobbies are making a come-back - a lot of hobby shops have seen an up-tick in interest (I suspect that people are getting kind of bored with video games... you can only play so many games about running around and shooting people before it just feels like perpetual groundhog day).

Try to find a group that gets together and does regular exercise routines... something related to a hobby program (there are usually Master Gardener groups around), or maybe a simple discussion group that just enjoys discussing current issues... or maybe they meet up for games of pool or what-not.

I wouldn't place too much thought on the smoking/addiction part. That is largely a part of your culture. If you're around people who smoke a lot (or when left to your own devices) - you'll tend to stick to a developed habit. Becoming active in other cultures with other habits will make it easier to abandon one you no longer want.

Or, if you find that you still want the effects of smoking but don't want nearly as much of the dirtiness of it - you can look into some of the vapor inhalant systems on the market.

Basically - what I'm saying is that smoking and your addiction is more of a symptom of the deeper problem (a general lack of feeling fulfilled) than the problem, itself. The reason you're having such difficulty is because you are simply treating the symptom as opposed to what it generating it.

Find some things to do that make you feel better about being you - and taking control of your life and actions will come much more naturally.
