Most will probably tell you it's because of 'plot'.
Minato was far too busy trying to seal the bijuu into Naruto. He simply couldn't break the ritual just to teleport himself, Kushina, and Naruto away.
Both of them knew they were going to die anyway. The least they could do is physically stop the claw themselves, to prevent Naruto being killed also.
Sigh.... it would've been quite the short story if Minato did everything right, no?
Whether he can actually deal with the kyubi or not is not the point. The point is that Minato didn't even have the mindset to deal with him to begin with after his encounter with Tobi but instead use his power because of future dangers, and it's what i'm saying. Now Minato before meeting Tobi seemed confident that he could deal with the Kyubi no problem even going as far as seeing Tobi as more of a threat than the Kyubi, so who knows? It's not as if we've seen Minato's full potential yetReally? You think Minato can kill the kyuubi?...smh
The part I highlighted is the reason I'm doing this post.
Forget being low on chakra, Minato had used the Reaper Death Seal so was going to die in a short while anyway, and he was numb and heavy from that sealing. And Kushina had the Kyuubi ripped from her body, which is supposed to be an instant death sentence. Tobi even congratulates her on surviving the ordeal, and compliments the power of the Uzumaki clan, and their longevity aka their long life spans.
These three reasons are why Minato couldn't just FTG himself, Kushina and Naruto away from the incoming Nine Tails attack.

I'm pretty damn fast, but was out of Chakra. Sorry if I didn't live up to your expectations.
No, he died for future purposes like i've said. Even if he killed the Kyubi at that moment, the village would be without a Jinchuriki for long, which would disturb the Bijuu balance. At that time, if Tobi come back with 7Bijuus, what would he have done? It's probably after thinking about things like that, that he decided to give Kyubi's power to someone capable to handle it(his son) and when he finally masters it, he uses his power to save the worldWell, we have seen his full potential, that's why he's dead, we haven't seen all his jutsu arsenals, but we've seen his hasty decision makings.

- He didn't want to kill Kyubi, but use his power to save the future of the world
- From the moment he used RDS, he knew he would die anyway, so there was no need to dodge his attack
- When he sealed half of Kyubi's chakra inside his body, he started going numb because he had difficulties to handle the powerful chakra that he sealed inside him, because of this, his movement speeds were slower. You can even see him panting most of the time after executing that sealing jutsu
"Well it was the heat of the moment."
"Speed kills"
If Minato is so fast/quick/agile why didn't he dodge the Nine Tails?
Maybe he wanted to die? Honestly, Minato could have teleported Naruto and Kushina into a safe environment.
There is no excuse to what he did, it was reckless and not well thought out? (I mean, If I was Minato, I would have just teleported the Nine Tails into a volcano or into the sun (exaggeration), I mean, c'mon!
"Well he ran out of chakra." Well he used his last chakra to seal the Nine Tails into Naruto and Kushina, (If I was Minato, I would have called Itachi and say, "Hey, I need your help buddy, use your sharingan to subdue the Nine Tails." Or any sharingan users. (right?, "well, you're not the writer.") [i know, just a "what if"]
I'm sure, Obito is not the only person who can hypnotize a Jinchuuriki?
"Well, go tell that to Masashi, you moron!"
Alright, cool, just a thought/loop holes/too easy/better way.
