This is a huge what-if. I don't know whether I believe it myself or not but it's food for thought.

Depending on the translation you read, Naruto wonders in chapter 485 (probably talking to himself) that his and Sasuke's roles could have been reversed.

Naruto says, "One misstep and I might've been thinking the same horrible things as you.":

Right now in the war Naruto is confronting Obito who is attempting to get Naruto to waver. He only needs to succeed once, and if the previous example is meant as an omen, and the first example foreshadowing, Naruto will be the next Sasuke, and Sasuke -- -- will inherit the role of Savior.

It wouldn't be the first time that the role of Savior went to two people:

One example that goes against this possibility is that Naruto keeps saying he'll never change, and I tend to believe him. Sasuke also said he'll never change. If we talk about them being Yin and Yang opposites, Yin and Yang are always transitioning from one into the other. It doesn't necessarily have to be a good vs. bad sort of role-reversal (Nagato wanted Peace too, but had an unpopular way of trying to achieve it), but still an opposition. So with that reasoning, it would be reasonable to expect that if one of them alters their goal, the other one might change too.

This is one way that we will still get to have a final confrontation between Naruto and Sasuke. If Sasuke chooses to protect the village, Naruto's goal might also evolve to keep up. Their roles might be reversed. It's really hard to believe that could happen, but what do you think?

Nah, Naruto would never suddenly just change his views like that. Sasuke had been unsure whether the path of revenge was the right one or not ever since he learned the whole truth behind Itachi's intentions. The case isn't the same with Naruto. He's been fighting for the acknowledgement of the village for such a long time, he's not gonna simply turn on it suddenly.

it was also stated that if the yin and yang (who's like water and oil) become one.. the world would be at peace, and i dont think someone from both sides will change, i feel like sasuke wont change even tho this times that he was been in the manga and seen some face emotions that he did, i dont think he change. but what i think is, after they sealed madara or killed obito or not or he escape and sh*t like that. they will still fight to the last time, remember sasuke is full of pride and E-ego... theres no way theyre gonna just ignore what they been decided for.

It's a well-written thread. But the idea itself sounds ridiculous, for many reasons...

No, that was just foreshadowing Kakashi and Obito and their separate paths.

There was already a misstep made by Naruto who faltered in his reasoning after Neji died. But Hinata was there to bring him around, and from this moment I think she wont let him turn to dark side of the force.

Madara said that the tablet said if two opposing forces but what you're talking about is homogenization, which is like what milk goes through to keep it from separating because it has both oil and water in it. I always read that as cooperate, getting along with each other. But I thought about your statement while I went to make myself some tea and it clarified for me what I think might be the other interpretation that Madara is talking about. His Infinite Tsukyomi sounds a whole lot like homogenization. Turning everybody into One.

True, Naruto defeated his hate at the Falls of Truth. When Gaara asked Sasuke if there was maybe the tiniest sliver of light, Sasuke said that he closed his eyes to it. If we're talking Yin and Yang, each force always has a small seed of the other inside of it. In these examples, each of them acknowledged that there's some light, or some hatred inside of them, but neither tried to destroy it. Naruto discovered how futile it would be to try so he accepted that it would always be a part of him and it lost its power. Sasuke simply looks away from the light because his goal isn't there.

You're right, he did. That shows that it's possible. Is Obito going to give up, though, or just try a little harder? The fight's still going.

He did, but he came back to his reasoning with it even stronger than before. After this chapter i posted, there were many speeches made by Naruto confirming what I say, for example to Lee or to Kakashi. Obito tried once and failed which made him very angry and reckless so I don't think he will try again. Now is his turn to rethink his resolve once Minato arrives to the battlefield ;)

Fantastic thread, if it wasn't for how mind-blowingly heroic and optimistic Naruto is- I could totally see this happening.

Nah, Naruto isn't the kind of guy. He has made it clear he is sticking to his path.

If naruto changes any it will be shortlived & the only change I can possibly see is obito breaking his spirit making him give up on hope then boom taka & the hokages show up naruto back to normal

Kishimoto wants to end his manga soon. This is the climax, and for this to be anywhere near believable he would need quite a few more years. Sasuke's switch is still very hit and miss for readers, and Naruto is the flagship of the series. I just don't think Kishimoto has the time to compellingly portray that aspect.

It's an interesting concept though, and something I'm sure Kishi considered. Plus there are way more issues like merchandise and financial issues. Naruto being the main character and title character of the series would pose significant issues in terms of sales if he was portrayed in an evil or somewhat sinister light especially this close to the end.

I would have loved to see it though, maybe earlier on.

I think one way that makes it more plausible would be something sort of similar to how he dealt with Pain, where he eventually realized that he was going about his goal all wrong. Before that, all he wanted to do was kill Pain, and then there would be Peace. This was before Pain confronted him with the flaws that were in that plan and that was probably the first time in the series that anybody managed to shut him up.

A similar thing could happen between Naruto and Sasuke. If they both have similar goals but different ways of trying to reach it just like Nagato vs Naruto. It doesn't have to be that Naruto's change will be KILL EVERYONE BREAK ALL BONDS MORE POWER CLEANSE THE WORLD and go all evil.

It's starting to look like they're already switched, in terms of who their Ancestors chose would be the Key to Peace: Power or Love. Naruto's powerups lately have been crazy so it seems he's leaning toward Power. He can't face the Juubi properly whenever Kurama needs to take a break. He has an army tens of thousands strong backing him up. On the other side we just found out that the Uchiha have the strongest Love, and Sasuke's decision is perhaps leaning toward Love. Maybe this type of switch is the kind of twist that Kishimoto is going for.
