During Itachi's fight with Kabuto, some people believe that Kabuto sliced Itachi in half with chakra scalpel by surprise, but in fact that's far from the truth, the truth is Itachi actually set it up, and here's my proofs:
Let's look at what Itachi did over here, after stabbing the Orochimaru head attached to Kabuto's body, he says "I will now start Izanami", then deactivates his ribcage Susanoo(which is more than enough defense for chakra scalpel), and makes the hand seal that had nothing to do with Izanami.
Notice Sasuke here, he doesn't know if the battle is over or not, so still had his ribcage Susanoo up for defense, in case Kabuto counter attacks.
Now for someone like Sasuke, who doesn't even know how Izanami works, is still suspicious after seeing Kabuto falling down, apparently from Izanami, then for someone like Itachi, who knows exactly how Izanami works and knows that the set up and preparation was not complete at the moment, how can he not know that Kabuto should be fine right now? It proves that his hand seal in this panel is not for Izanami. As Itachi makes the hand seal, he deactivates his ribcage Susanoo, and by now, I think his intentions are pretty obvious to the readers, it's actually to make Kabuto think that he's doing a jutsu right now and left himself defenseless wide open for a counter attack, Kabuto fell into the trap and counter attacked at exactly this moment, many thought it was by surprise, but it's actually well anticipated by Itachi, here are some more proofs.
In the manga, when a character is surprise attacked and is either confused or before one can react, usually he says "!!??", when a character is surprise attacked but somewhat reacted, usually he says "!!".
In Itachi's case, it's neither, he kept his hand seal and the first thing he said was "Sasuke", even his facial expression didn't seem surprised, which indicates that he was not surprised at all by this attack, he wanted Kabuto to come at him, it was a part of his plan.
Then why did he trick Kabuto into attacking him at this moment? It is because he needs to give the sword back to Kabuto to finish Izanami, this is the best and quickest way for Sasuke throwing it without looking suspicious to Kabuto, and on top of that, once he is down it will cause Sasuke and Kabuto to have a short battle, perfect chance to distract Kabuto so he can sneak up on Kabuto close range, force Kabuto to attack with no option other than using the sword, therefore completing Izanami.
So my conclusion is Itachi gets cut in half by Kabuto purposely to finish setting up Izanami in the most efficient way, he well anticipated Kabuto's attack, and if he didn't intentionally drop down his defense, the ribcage Susanoo he had would be more than enough to block Kabuto's close range attack.
Maybe a lot of people already posted threads about this situation, if I'm just repeating someone else's topic then I'm sorry about it.
