Easily one of the most interesting and well-constructed stories I've stumbled upon during my time as a mangiac! There is a manga, anime, light novel, games and a movie out just recently(no sub yet).

Anime trailer:
Warning: It will contain spoilers!

Here's also another, because it's awesome. No eng subs, just spanish~
Anyway, focusing on the manga and anime, which are the formats of storytelling we are usually most used to utilize; here follows a description from batoto;

In a world where supernatural powers exist through science, and magic exists through religion, Kamijō Tōma is an ordinary high school boy with terrible academic scores and a strange power on his right hand called the "Imagine Breaker".

The Imagine Breaker can negate all forms of magic, esper, divine abilities, and even Tōma's own good luck. His Imagine Breaker's immense strength is literally immeasurable, so hapless Kamijō is labeled as a "level 0 esper" in Academy City. One day, he finds a mysterious girl in white robes hanging off his window balcony. She says she is being chased by sorcerers, and that she is a nun from the Church of England whose memories have been forcibly replaced by Index-Librorum-Prohibitorum: The 103,000 forbidden texts by the Church.

Tōma's story in the realm of science and magic in Academy City has just begun....

This manga is based on Kamachi Kazuma's original light novel series.

I'm telling you now so that you know, expect awesome right hooks/uppercuts straight up the face on pretty much all the adversaries, boys and girls alike!

Hope everyone considers watching/reading this series, it's awesome.
56 manga chapters as of yet and two seasons of 24 eps each!

There's also worthy of mention the side-story of one of the main heroines' perspective called 'To Aru Kagaku no Railgun/A Certain Scientific Railgun'

Is the manga actually worth reading? Is it as good as or better than the anime? As I don't watch anime all that often.

In my opinion it is, as I'm someone whom generally prefers reading to watching myself.
I enjoy it because of the story, so I would recommend it for that, not that the other parts lack(it can be quite humorous).
Ultimately, I would suggest you give the first chapter a go if you prefer reading, see what it's like and decide thereafter.

I can't make a comparison between anime and manga, I don't like such comparisons in general, but what I can say is that the anime works just as well as the manga, albeit I remember it following a bit of a different chronology, not that it makes much difference though.

You too?! Awesome!
Yeah, Accelerator is an epic character, you can tell even if you just read the manga, but you've gotta admit though; when Touma punches someone, it's always epic! xD

He's friggin' crazy is what he is, but he's a very good character nonetheless! Gotta love him and the faces of all the crazy antagonists in this series, there's something about the way they are drawn! xD
You've seen how they look when they're punched by Touma right? All twisted and stuff! XD
