Both Hashirama and Tobirama have no perception of Minato's abilities as they were both dead long before Minato was born. Because of this, I believe that they both severely underestimate him. Here are a few reasons why:

Minato died fighting Kurama:

The way Minato worded his death against Kurama and his reign as the 4th Hokage leads Hashi and Tobi to believe that he is inherently not very powerful. Hasirama was able to completely decimate Kurama and made fighting him look like child's play. Now Tobirama most likely wouldn't make such quick work of Kurama but he would still defeat him nonetheless.

This is however taken GREATLY out of context. Minato used a fair amount of chakara simply maintaining Kushina's seal during birth. He was then forced to fight Obito, a shinobi with a S/T jutsu that surpassed his own. After all this he then was forced to battle Kurama all while protecting the village, teleporting a massive TBB and Kurama himself away from the village consuming an inconceivable amount of chakra. Kakashi was only barely able to teleport the Hachibi WITH the assistance of Kurama's chakra and a fully regenerated chakra pool. However the way he made it sound was as if he was simply too weak to defeat Kurama. Orochimaru aslo impies that he and many people in the village believed that Minato was not fit to be the Hokage, again lowering his perceived power in Tobi and Hashi's eyes.

Hiraishin>FTG?

Here Hashirama asks Tobi to make preparations for his Hiraishin in order to teleport to the battlefield. Little do they know that Minato has mastery over a S/T tech that is superior to the Tobirama's. Infact Minato can teleport to the battlefield at anytime he pleases without any preparations. His FTG seal is infused in Naruto's Seal as it was in Kushina's. Now this isn't really an instance of underestimating Minato, but is does show that they have absolutely no knowledge of his prowess.

What I'm trying to get at really is that both Hashirama and Tobirama currently have a preconceived notion of Minato's strength that is far from the truth. Once they witness him on the battlefield they will be in for a serious shock as Minato displays his raw speed, genius, and insane chakra levels.

What do you guys think? Are the 1st and 2nd in for a big surprise?

Tobirama has excellent sensing abilities, he would have sensed any massive chakra emanating from Minato and mentioned it by now.
Chakra level aside, Minato will surely impress everyone with his speed and skills.

You can't really "sense" speed and power, just chakra levels.

Interesting point. I think that Kishi was simply too occupied developing the story for him to throw in another screen adding to Minato's feats as we have already had many chapters showcasing Minato's abilities.

They showed nothing that tells us they underrate him. He is a Hokage that is impressive enough, aside from that Tobirama may be surprised at his S/T ability. I don't think Minato could compete with Hashi and Tobirama imo.

Their assumption of his power is probably correct, because of the fact that Hokages are responsible for protecting the village and would need to be pretty strong.

However they are definitely in for a treat when they see his skill

Sure, it was never stated, but most things in the manga are never clearly stated with dialogue. What do you expect Hashirama to say?...Wow you were crappy Hokage and if i was there that would have never happened...

Sorry if that sounds rude but my whole point in making this thread was to point out just a few of the occasions where Minato is indirectly belittled or overlooked in the presence of Hashirama and Tobirama. If I Minato was a complete stranger to me and all I had to go off of was what has been shown so far, I would think that he was ill-fitted to be a Hokage.

i dont think that minato can compete on strenght or number of jutsus with the 1 and 2, but his speed and quick reasoning makes him a fearsome oponent. I like him but i dont think he can solo everyone. I didnt see the other kages looking down to him.

I don't think that they under.... him. You make it sound like taking down Kurama is nothing for Hashi and Tobirama. Well maybe for Hashi, but for Tobirama NO WAY... But i know what you think. Me too think that Minato is going to surprise them :)

Definitely once Hashirama/Tobirama will see Minato performing on the battlefield, they will praise him for his skills.

I agree 100%. Minato was and is severely underrated. Moreover, I think Kishi made Minato considerably weak in the eyes of fans too, since the kind of strength he was shown having didn't live upto the kind of hype he was given. Nonetheless, I think we can see the real Minato and his prowess in the upcoming battle.

I think they would be impressed by Minato, but his chakra levels are still likely to be incomparable to Hashirama and Tobirama's. They have no evidence of his techniques either, so they are likely to be highly underestimating him. Minato's two greatest assets are his speed and his intelligence, which he will definitely impress them with.

I don't see him being underrated, compared to what we've seen/know of their abilities Minato's position is pretty accurate.
