This thread maybe long but try to bear with me at least.
A lot of people complain about how Naruto is a very bad character, well in my opinion he's not.
Naruto has been my favorite character since the beginning of the series, and even though he has his flaws, I will always remain loyal to the character no matter what happens or what people say about him.
So I'm going to state five simple reasons as to why Naruto will always be my favorite character. And these reasons are no bullshit at all.
1. His positive attitude
(He symbolizes that even though life is hard, if you have faith in yourself, and keep pushing yourself, you'll eventually find a light at the end of the tunnel, and I was actually able to find that in real life, no bullshit.)
2. He understand what it truly means to suffer
(A lot of people would complain that because Naruto is the child of prophecy, it was his destiny to be where he is today, but that still doesn't change the fact that he still had to go through a lot suffering, something that a lot of people can still relate to.)
I've also heard some people complain about how Naruto suddenly forgot about how the village treated him after he was declared a hero for saving them. Isn't it common sense that a person should not dwell on there own past? So why should Naruto?
He knew that in order to keep moving forward, and put the past behind him so that he could trust the village, he had to trust himself first. I honestly think people should learn from that instead of hating on it.
3.He acknowledges that he doesn't have to do everything on his own, since he has his friends to back him up.
Something that he actually does during the war.
4.He understands what it truly means to be a shinobi.
5.He gave me the confidence to go out there and make friends.
Now even though these are my reasons for liking him, I still have a some problems with his character.
But before that, I'll address the main problems that a lot of people have with his character
Naruto's Ideology
Now the reason why I don't have that much problem with it is because the truth is, life is hard, and even though the past can be overshadowing, don't you want to have strong ideals, and faith in yourself in order to push yourself forward. Gaara is prime example, after meeting Naruto, he decided to put his past behind him and became Kazekage, so if it wasn't Naruto, Gaara wouldn't be wear he is today. But will I admit that Kishi can overdo it at times, especially during the war.
Naruto's Talk no Jutsu
Now when it comes to this issue, people often go to say how Naruto using the Talk no Jutsu on Nagato shouldn't have happened and that it was complete bullshit.
But in all honestly it wasn't, because people tend to forget that Naruto does in fact has the power to change people, and this was even stated by both Kakashi and Temari in the manga.
And this was stated back in the first arc of Part II, so even at the very beginning of Shippuden, Kishimoto had already established that Naruto has the power to change people. Which is why when Naruto was able to change Nagato, I was never mad nor surprised about that because that is what Naruto does. So for those who say that Naruto's Talk no Jutsu is bullshit, you haven't been paying that much attention to the overall plot, because Kishimoto at the very beginning of Part II already established that Naruto has the power to change people.
So after reading this, you should now clearly understand that its within Naruto's character to have the Talk no Jutsu.
Whether you like it or not that's all on you.
Naruto's Relationships
People often complain about how Naruto doesn't interact with his friends that often. For those who've actually been paying attention to the manga, then you should clearly understand that with the way Shippuden works, there was always something serious happening, mainly because of the Akatsuki. So how could Naruto even find the time to interact with his friends if he had to worry about the Akatsuki coming after him?
Also, there have actually been a couple of examples where Naruto has bonded with his friends.
Sai:
Shikamaru:
Now these are two big examples of Naruto interacting with his friends:
So hopefully this helps you guys understand that Naruto does interact with friends, but because there was always something serious happening in Shippuden, he doesn't do it as often as most complainers want him to.
But regardless, it's been established that these guys will always be Naruto's friends
Naruto & Sasuke "Boy Love"
Whenever I hear this issue, either people casually joke about it or they hate it and criticize Naruto's character because of it.
Now I'll admit that this issue can be sometimes over emphasized in certain chapters, but I don't have a problem with it because its not boy love at all, their bond, their friendship is completely justifiable for one simple reason.
They were both done wrong by Obito and the village.
Cause remember, Obito was behind the Nine-Tails attack, which lead to Naruto becoming the Nine-Tails' jinchuriki, and because of that, Naruto was forced to live a life of loneliness since the villagers resented him because he contained the monster that attacked Konoha.
Sasuke, kinda the same thing, which is further explained down here.
This is why Naruto is so strongly connected to Sasuke because apart from Iruka, Sasuke was the only one in the village that Naruto could relate to on a personal level.
He even says so right here:
Also for those who say that their friendship/rivalry was one-sided and that Sasuke didn't care about Naruto, look at what he says here at the Final Valley:
This statement clearly shows that Sasuke did care about Naruto before he decided to go to Orochimaru.
So the "bond" between Naruto and Sasuke is not "boy love" at all, its completely justified.
Whether you agree or not that's all on you.
Naruto's Destiny
This is a major gripe that a lot fans of the series have when it comes to Naruto. Cause ever since it was established that Naruto was the Child of Prophecy, fans complain how all along it was his destiny to be where he is today and that the message that you have to struggle to achieve your goals was completely replaced. But that still doesn't change the fact that Naruto still went through all that suffering, something that people still can relate to. Now even though I can agree with that to a certain extent, in the end it was still Naruto's choice to decide what path he was going to take.
Here's the prophecy the Great Toad Sage said:
And look at what Naruto says here to Sasuke:
What he tells Sasuke actually ties in to what the Elder Toad said. So in a way, it was never really his destiny to be where he his now, cause he still had the choice to walk the path of darkness, but luckily he chose the path of the hero because he was able make friends, and meet people like Sasuke and Iruka.
He even tells Itachi that he's made it did this far thanks to the people around him:
Cause think about it, if Naruto had not made any connections with people and he chose to walk the path of darkness, not only would it confirm what the Elder Toad said about "The Child of Prophecy" potentially destroying the world, but worse, Naruto would've been the spitting image of Obito Uchiha!!!
Now ask yourself, would you really prefer Naruto be exactly like Obito than the way he already is now? I think you guys should really be grateful that Kishimoto made Naruto a decent character in your eyes in comparison to Obito.
Now even though I'll admit that Kishimoto might have made this a problem for some people who've follow the series for so long, I don't really mind it because in a way, it was never truly Naruto's destiny to be where he is today, because he still had the choice to walk different path if he had not made any friends at all.
Now those are the main problems that people have with Naruto as a character. Now to address mine, truth be told there's only one big problem that I have with Naruto's character: His resolve to deal with Sasuke.
Down here, I'll explain how I belive Naruto should deal with Sasuke once they fight.
Now this is my closing statement if you want to read it:
Now I know that there are going to be a bunch of haters regardless of the logic I presented here, but I don't really care, because no matter what, Naruto will always be my favorite character in the series.

Sasuke, kinda the same thing, which is further explained down here.
Remember when Obito posing as Madara told Sasuke the truth about Itachi and how he said that the Nine-Tails attack on Konoha was a natural occurrence:
That was the one part that Obito actually lied about cause if you think about it because Obito was the one controlling the Nine-Tails to attack the village the Elders were right to suspect an Uchiha behind the attack and it was because of this suspicion that the Elders of Konoha decided to relocate the Uchiha to another section of the village and put them under heavy surveillance. The Uchiha were obviously upset over this so they started planning to overthrow the village. Itachi disagreed with this coup d'état so he told the Elders what the Uchiha were planning and because there was no time to negotiate with the Uchiha, the Elders forced Itachi to slaughter his own clan and pretty sure you guys no what happens next.
So if you really think about it, that attack on Konoha is what lead to the Uchiha's demise years later, and also what lead to Sasuke living a very lonely life as a kid.
Sure you can make the argument that it was the village's right to kill off the Uchiha because they were planning a coup, but just because it's their right to protect the village, does it mean that its fair for a young boy to lose his entire family? Of course not.

A lot of fans say that Naruto is going to bring Sasuke back to the village and everyone will live happily ever after. For those who think that's going to happen, they need to go back and re-read the Five Kage Summit Arc.
Konoha's Opinion on Sasuke
If Naruto were to take Sasuke back to the village, do you guys honestly think that the village would forgive him as if nothing ever happened.
The Ninja World's Opinion on Sasuke
Naruto's Opinion on Sasuke
But this could've change after these two crucial points for his character development.
Ex.1 Naruto's talk with Kushina
After meeting his mom and hearing the story about how both his parents died to protect him from the Nine-Tails and how they entrusted him to be the savior of the ninja world by using the Nine-Tails power, we see Naruto restating his resolve on life.
Ex. 2 Naruto's talk with Itachi
Itachi clearly tells Naruto that if he were to become Hokage, he should never forget his friends or do everything on his own.
Then later during the war, we see Naruto multiple times restating that he still wants to become Hokage.
Now that we are fully aware that Naruto will never give up on his dream to become hokage, here's how I believe how his resolve to deal with Sasuke should have changed.
Naruto will still fight Sasuke in order to protect the village while at the same time try to free him from his hatred, but instead of both of them dying, Naruto would want to be the one to emerge victorious.
Cause with all the things that has recently happened with Naruto, why would he want to abandon his friends, his village, his parents' hopes and dreams, and his dream to become hokage just to die for Sasuke's sake?
By the time this fight actually comes, I believe that Naruto should have this mindset. Now what the outcome of the fight will be is all on Kishimoto.
But in my opinion, either Sasuke actually does die during this fight or he survives and becomes a wandering ninja for the rest of his life. As for Naruto, he can't die during this fight, he's the main freaking character for god's sake.
Also, whether Sasuke remains evil or becomes good thanks to Naruto is all on Kishimoto, but in my opinion, I don't really care because regardless of what happens to Sasuke, he is not returning to the village, period.
But I will point this out, if Sasuke does remain evil, Naruto is going to have to force himself to do what Hashirama did.
In this panel, Hashirama decides to put his own village before his former friend, now depending on what Sasuke chooses in chapter 627, if he decides to remain evil, Naruto is going to have to force himself to make the same choice that Hashirama made cause again, why would he want to abandon his friends, his village, his parents' hopes and dreams, and his dream to become hokage all just for Sasuke's sake?
Even though it would be sad, it would be great character development, and it would also show that Naruto is ready to shoulder the responsibilities of being Hokage.
But depending on what Sasuke chooses in 627, will have to wait and see.
Now I'm saying that this ending definite, cause Naruto can still save Sasuke, I'm just pointing out what could most likely happen if Sasuke decides to remain evil. That's it.
Konoha's Opinion on Sasuke
If Naruto were to take Sasuke back to the village, do you guys honestly think that the village would forgive him as if nothing ever happened.
Sai makes it clear to Naruto right here that Konoha is pretty much done with Sasuke.
This is where Naruto starts to realize that his dreams of bringing back Sasuke are pretty much crushed.

The Ninja World's Opinion on Sasuke
Also, we can't ignore the fact that Sasuke is still considered an international criminal for attacking the Five Kage Summit.
The Sand Siblings even inform Naruto about everything that happened at the Five Kage Summit.
Even if he does look depressed, Naruto now realizes that not even the entire ninja world would allow for Sasuke to be brought back to Konoha after all he's done.

Naruto's Opinion on Sasuke
With all of that in mind, when he finally confronts Sasuke, Naruto's state his clear resolve to dealing with Sasuke.
Naruto clearly states that his resolve is to fight and potentially kill Sasuke in order to protect the village, even at the cost of his life, and through this fight he'll be able to free Sasuke from his hatred. But even if Naruto were to change Sasuke through this fight, Naruto is fully aware that he won't be able to bring Sasuke back to the village after all he's done. Just pointing that out.
Naruto even tells Shikamaru that he is in no way going to protect Sasuke.
But Naruto's resolve comes into conflict with his dream to become hokage.

Now even though he might still have a bunch of other flaws, Naruto will always be my favorite character, no matter what.
Another thing, even though Naruto doesn't have to be your favorite character, in my opinion, I just don't understand how people can dislike the main character of his own series. There's got to be at least something that you like about him.
After all the manga is called "Naruto", and the series does mainly revolve around Naruto Uzumaki, and if you don't even like him, then what's the point in reading the manga at all?
Sure you can make the argument that you just want to see what happens at the end of the series, but that's just how I feel.
Again, he doesn't have to be your favorite character, but in my opinion, if people don't even like the main character of the series named after him, then they're just wasting their time reading the manga.
Also, don't you think that Kishimoto is going to continue developing Naruto's character by the time he's older.
I have strong faith in Kishimoto that he will take Naruto's character development towards the right direction.
Think about it, by the time he becomes Hokage(which he will), Naruto will probably have the proper mindset that he needs to become a true ninja.
Just give Kishi a chance, Naruto's development as a character has obviously not stopped.
It's going to continue as the series progresses.
Lastly, you got to remember, Naruto's still a 16-year old kid, so by the time he's an adult, he should have the proper mindset of a true ninja.
