Well, we don't know the circumstances behind the Sage and Juubi encounter.

I don't think anyone is arguing that the Juubi doesn't have a mind either (at least I've never heard it). But what I do believe is that it had good reason to attack humanity. As we know, it created the land, mountains, seas, etc. And when those were being torn apart by constant man-made wars (as we know is the case in teh Sage's time) then the Juubi realized Man and Nature could not live together.
